Pros:Two screens, carrying case, accessories

Cons:Awful customer service (or lack thereof), overpriced repair, flimsy warranty

The Bottom Line: Despite the initial bells and whistles, the unit will more than likely die right after the insufficient 90-day warranty has passed.

We purchased this system in March '05 knowing that we had a cross-country trip (CA to NH) ahead of us with our rather energetic 9-month-old son. We had looked at several different models and at different stores to compare prices. We managed to find this model at Fry's Electronics (our most favoritest store in the world), it was the only one with two 7" screens (!), and it was the last one on the shelf. However, the red flags should have been raised immediately when we saw the "customer return" label, and the "factory refurbished" label slapped on the box. Silly us...more like desparate us.
We brought the unit home, plugged it in, got the Baby Einstein going and marvelled at the crisp, clear picture on both screens, the wonderful sound, and all the cool accessories. The handy-dandy carrying case was totally awesome with all it's storage pockets and accessories. Oh, for the money ($299) this puppy was loaded!
So, we made the trip across country with no problems. It played beautifully. The son was happy, we were happy, we couldn't have asked for a better journey until...
We got settled into our new house in New Hampshire, and decided to head to Maine one day. On the way up, the player was acting a bit strange: it wouldn't spin up the DVD at first. I turned it off and on a couple of times, and tried again. The DVD played, and we made it to the LLBean store with little fuss from the son. On the way home was another story. Despite my husband's best efforts, he could not get the player to turn on. The monitors worked so we knew we had power. But the laser tray would not spin up the DVD. Crap!! Mind you, this was late July that the player died...conveniently outside of the 90-day warranty window. Oh wait, that's right, it was refurbished so the warranty doesn't exist!! Crap!!
We made it home and I called g2g Gear the following Monday. I initially looked for their website for customer service information, etc. Funny, the website that was there in March no longer existed in July. Red flag-red flag! So I called the number listed in my owners manual, and I had to wait 15 minutes on hold (there's a point in mentioning the waiting time...). Then I had this pleasant, sugary-sweet "customer service" rep tell me it would cost $95 just to look at the unit (after I spend ungodly amounts of postage to ship it back to Ontario, CA). She figured it was one of two things, of which the parts would cost $15 or $35, respectively. Oh, and not to mention the ungodly postage to ship it back to me. So, I tell her to hold off on a repair order while I discuss it with the hubby. Hubby asks if we can just buy the two parts in question and do the repair ourselves (we're rather handy engineers who have built/fixed countless computers and electronic "toys" on our own).
I attempt to contact "customer service" again. First time I waited 18 minutes on hold and hung up. Second time I waited 28 minutes on hold and hung up. Third time I waited 42 minutes on hold and hung up. Thank goodness it's a toll free call, and I had lots of chores I could do simultaneously (i.e. fold clothes, mop floors, etc). And, I called at different times of day thinking there may be better times to call (i.e. to avoid the morning rush, lunch hour, etc).
Needless to say, my patience has worn thin with these yahoos. We're already looking for another unit...I might call one more time but I'm willing to bet no one will pick up, or if they do, they'll tell me I can't just buy the parts because of copyright laws or some other BS reason.
So, long story short--do some research, go with a reliable brand that has at least a 1-year warranty on parts, and avoid anything refurbished!!

Update: I finally got a hold of customer service! I called 2 minutes prior to them "opening" at 8 a.m. PST. I asked about buying the parts necessary to do the repairs ourselves and was told "no". Reason: "we're a repair center and we will only sell you the accessories, not the parts to fix the unit". So, it would cost roughly $12 to ship it there, $95 to have them "diagnose" the problem, and $12 to ship it back. Parts and labor, I'm sure, would be outrageous. I'll be buying a new unit, nonetheless.
