"The 18-Quart Roaster Oven" Another Great Appliance by GE

Written: Feb 04 '04
Pros:Everything!!! I Can cook my way to heaven with this one.
Cons:None: MAKE SPACE, it's Big, about 2ft by 14 inches.
The Bottom Line: If this GE Roaster Oven could talk it would say"come cook with me baby" After the first meal you would never want to give it up.

Just thinking about this roaster makes my mouth water. I can't help but visualize a large roast with cut potatoes, carrots, and some fresh green peas from the garden simmering in this roaster just waiting for hungry mouths to devour it.

Or maybe I can smell the 25lb. turkey.

This roaster will spoil you, it is More than just a roaster, I swear it can make a good cook out of someone who can't boil water.

I bought it about a year ago, before I had my new stove put in, but we had a power outage the day I was planning on using it, so it ended up staying in it's box and forgotten about till I pulled it out this Christmas while cleaning and decided to open it and try it out.

Upon first looking at it, it is a handsome appliance, you just want to hug it and put your arms around it, simple white with a touch of black on the handles, and the rim, it has a very smooth elegant look, that makes you just want to run your fingers down it imaging the meals you can cook up in it..... Lobster with butter sauce, roast duck, steamed vegetables, baked breads, double chocolate cake with melted chocolate chunks, inside. The list is endless...

Do you love your crock pot? Well this GE-18 Quart roaster oven is like the Paul Bunyon of crock pots and more.

It is big, takes up counter space of 24 inches x 14 inches, sits about 13 inches high in the middle with the lid on. It is approximately six inches deep, with the insert cooking pan in. The lid is dome shaped, not flat so this give about another 4 to 6 inches of depth to the inside removable roasting, or cooking pan. The removable roasting pan is a good 11 inches wide and about 17˝, inches long. It is shaped like a square oval.

This roaster holds a lot of food, and a pretty good size bird. The manual says 20lbs., but I usually buy a 25lb. turkey and it fit without any problem.

It comes with a manual, the enamel-on-steel roasting pan insert, the top, or lid (with steam vents) and the removable chrome plated meat or turkey rack. There is nothing really to assemble, but what little bit there is, takes less than a minute. Then plug it up and you are ready to cook.

The handle has a rest for the lid, but I only tried it, it is not a feature I would use since the lid then sticks up from the roaster about a foot and my pot sits side ways. I would have to reach over it, however if you can't find a place to put you hot lid I guess this is a nice thing to know about. The roaster does give off heat, and steam so if you are close you will feel it, if too close it will bite you, so give it some space and put it in a safe place.

The control knob, or dial is right up front in the middle and easy to read. It has 7 temperature settings plus off.
150°,200°,250°,300°,350°,400°,450°F,and OFF at the bottom. A red light comes on when the roaster is on. It does not require a 3-prong outlet, but it needs to be plugged into the correct size outlet.

The manual does give some need to know information along with some recipes, and temperature requirements of certain foods, so it would be wise to read it. The English section is only 8 pages, 3 instructions on the roaster, including a diagram of parts, the other 5 "How to cook" and recipes. About 5 minutes of actual reading.

Of course you can not immerse the roaster in water to clean it, and THE ROASTER INSERT PAN CAN NOT GO IN THE DISHWASHER. Clean this appliance by hand using a sponge or dish cloth with warm to hot soapy water. It does clean up easy. Unplug before cleaning the roaster.

Spoil Me Baby!!! I found myself enjoying cooking so much with this GE 18-Quart Roaster Oven that I was cooking meals I did not need, I was just having so much fun. I wanted to try everything, Chicken and Dumplings, Chile, (Chicken Tetrazzini, found in the manual), Cheesecake, ginger bread, stew, soup, meat loaf, and......my imagination could just go on.

If your turkey touches the lid it may not brown without help, so you may have to baste it. Any pan you put inside should go on the rack.

Hickory-smoked brisket (in manual)
~3 to 4lbs. beef brisket
~1/4 cup liquid smoke
~1/2 tsp. onion powder
~1/2 tsp. celery salt

Place brisket on large piece of aluminum foil, Sprinkle

generously with the liquid smoke and seasonings, Wrap the brisket with the foil and crimp edges. Place in cooking pan. Cover and cook at 250°F for 4 hours.

The only thing left to do now is pull up a chair, grab a plate and sit down and eat. I've been inviting everyone over a lot anyway cause I just keep cooking up a storm.

I also bought the Buffet Server that can be used with this,
that's another review, but you can use it inside this roaster to steam, warm up and keep food warm.

Is It Energy Efficient?
To be honest this is something I have been trying to find out. This is the first appliance I have purchased since the new rating system that did not have the ENERGY STAR label. I guess I will know in about 3 months if I continue to use it the way I am, how it will effect my electric bill.
