Pros: Works great, if you don't mind it being broken for 5 months at a time
Cons: Did I mention it was broken for 5 months? It is also quite loud.
The Bottom Line: It's an effective hood for island use, if you don't mind the decibels. But beware the combination of temperamental GE Monogram products and apparently incompetent service technicians.

We've owned this hood for about 2 years. The different light settings are nice. The fan is very powerful. Since you would buy this hood for an island, the unfortunate thing is that suction is more difficult when you are not up against a wall, so you must use the highest setting - the one which sounds like a small plane taking off - to vent effectively.
The hood works well, however, assuming the hood is actually working. We bought four GE Monogram appliances for our kitchen remodel. Three of the four - range hood, trivection double oven, and dishwasher - have broken on us at least twice, each. (Our fridge has had no problems)
The hood stopped working intermittently, then quit altogether about 5 months ago. We called for service (which is handled through our GE warranty), and a technician was scheduled to be sent out.
Suffice to say it was just fixed two days ago. We received six technician visits altogether, spanning a 5-month period, to get the hood fixed. I missed nine days of work to accommodate the 5-hour window for these service calls - nine, because the techs no-showed for three of these appointments. The reason it took so many visits?
Visit 1 - Two techs assessed yes, the hood is not working (we could have told them this over the phone). They said they would need to order some parts, which would be shipped to our home, at which point we should call them to reschedule.
Visit 2 - techs installed a new computer board to realize either the board was bad, or yet another component was bad. They ordered some more parts and rescheduled.
Visit 3 - techs (different ones this time) said some parts were missing, and we should not have scheduled the visit before the parts arrived. The previous techs had not told us what parts they had ordered, and we didn't think to ask. New parts were ordered.
Visit 4 - the original techs arrived to install new parts, two of them. They said one part was still missing but insisted it had been ordered and accused us of losing it. They seemed very confused about what to do next and reordered all the parts again.
Visit 5 - new techs arrived to tell us the parts HAD arrived, but had been installed previously and so were not missing. But the hood still didn't work, so they finally determined one part they installed was broken, and ordered a new one.
Visit 6 - new part installed, hood works, as of 2 days ago.
I am breaking down these visits because I think it is important for any consumer thinking to purchase a GE Monogram product to know two things - one, based on our experiences, these products are likely to be temperamental and break easily (we only cook a couple of times/week); two, when you call for service, it is an ordeal to get anything fixed.
Our hood was fixed literally two days ago. Today, I go to turn on our dishwasher, only to discover the heat turns on, but there is no water.
***UPDATE 5/19 - Our hood has quit again. The fan works, but not the light or any other feature.
