rockpick's Full Review: General Electric WPGT9360EPL Top Load Washer
I'm told that LG makes this washer for GE and, as such, if you are a steadfast 'Buy American' type (like me), this may come as a suprise.
GE manufactures nearly all of their consumer washer line in a plant in Louisville, Kentucky. This washer, however, is a different beast - much to my suprise. It seems that LG is actually making this product and branding it as GE in a plant in Canada. Obviously, based on my earlier notation, this was a whammy - an unknown one at the time of purchase.
Initial impression of this machine is *WOW*. It's sleek, very sophisticated, packed with some technology, and, in a wash/dry set, looks better than anything I've seen on the market. At this point in time, we've had ours for 3 months.
Almost 3 months to the day, the washer began making some horrible 'gear grinding' sounds. A call to GE Consumer Services dispatched a technician to our house 2 days later. The technician isolated the problem very quickly but had to order parts as they were not on hand. A week surpassed, the parts were delivered to my house, and the technician reappeared. Once the parts were replaced, all seems back to normal.
Obviously, we were disappointed that such an expensive machine still within its honeymoon period would have a problem that would nearly render it as a paper weight but, I've managed to get over that and displace the problem as one of those little manufacturing qwirks that are unavoidable.
While previous reviews mention that it's incredibly loud, I haven't personally found the noise level to be an annoyance. Additionally, after a very stead movement of clothes towards the washer over the past 3.5 months, I can safely say that we've not had a single problem with it chewing clothes into a pulp as is reported within some reviews.
The technology that is in this machine is very impressive to me. The dryer and washer actually communicate meaning that once your washer load is done, it communicates the specifics (load size, load type, etc) over to the dryer so that it knows what is coming. Once communications cease, the dryer automatically sets itself with time, heat level and other parameters so that all you have to do is press 'START'. Very crafty and very handy in my book.
Don't let the technology, the touch screen controls, or the fact that there is a data cable involved with this set scare the non-technologically advanced folks out there. The function of this machine pair is similar to that of a microwave and is very easy to use.
All in all, the machine gets a solid 9 out of 10 points in my book.
