Pros: Looks good.
Cons: Very poor quality for the price.
August 2006: As my 16-year-old top freezer GE was gasping its last breaths, I started reading the reviews. They were mixed pretty much across the board for all brands, and my old GE had worked well and never needed repairs, so I decided to go with a new GE Profile.
My first mistake was to buy it from Lowe's - a very long story, but I will say Lowe's blew the delivery date three times (two no-shows and no calls!). When the new fridge did finally arrive, it was covered in dents and scratches. I haggled for days with Lowe's and managed to score a decent discount and a free year extended service plan. This, as it turns out, has saved me a lot of money in the 16 months I've had this new fridge.
Just after the factory warranty ran out, the temperature in the fridge compartment began to spike intermittently, sometimes for as long as a day. I thought I might have left a door ajar while I'd gone to work or something, but the third time it happened I realized something was malfunctioning.
After hours of phone calls between Lowe's and GE haggling over who was responsible for servicing, it was finally settled that Lowe's would handle it. They put me in touch with an independent repair service, and a repair man came out within two days to investigate. He declared a bad fan motor. Then I had to wait another two weeks for a new fan motor to be shipped from GE before he could actually do the repair.
Following the repair, I decided to clean the inside of the fridge before putting the food back in. As I lifted a shelf to remove it for cleaning, the plastic frame cracked. And it happened to be the "quick space" split shelf (probably the most costly one to replace). Also, the stop on one of the drawer tracks has broken off.
A month ago, the fan motor began to fail again. This time, I called the repair service directly before calling Lowe's. The repair man told me over the phone that it's likely faulty electronics and the board will have to be replaced (according to him, this happens a lot). I'm still waiting on that. The jury's still out on whether I can get the broken shelf and drawer track replaced under the service plan.
I am very disappointed with the quality of this refrigerator and wish now that I had refused delivery when I had the chance. Sure, it looks nice in my kitchen, and it's very chic, but I've had nothing but bad luck with it since before it was even in my house. I'm constantly wondering what will break next.
I've since had to replace my old GE dishwasher. Needless to say, the new one is not a GE product.
