shantel575's Full Review: GHD Hot Pink 2007 Iv Styler Breast Cancer Awarenes...
I have had very naturally curly hair for my entire life, so sometimes it's nice to have a change! I took the plunge a couple of years ago and got a cute, trendy, straight haircut and have been using flat irons ever since. I started out with a basic (um, cheap) one and I got what I paid for. Then I went to a Jilbere brand iron and it worked pretty well but my hair is SO curly I wanted something even better. Next I bought an original CHI iron because I had friends who used them and had recommended them to me. Unfortunately it only lasted about 6 months before it stopped working properly. At this point, I wasn't buying another one until I did some serious research.
I began to read reviews on all types of irons here on Epinions, on other Beauty dedicated sites (makeupalley.com) and also just by googling different irons for sites with consumer ratings. It was then that I found out that I wasn't alone when it came to having problems with the CHI flat irons. In my research I found that they tend to be hit or miss, and that wasn't a chance I was willing to take again. There was one iron that seemed to have flawless feedback, reviews and ratings all over the internet... and that was the ghd styler.
I made my purchase on Sephora.com almost a year ago, and when I saw that the iron was available in black and hot pink, I just had to have the hot pink one. And it was for a good cause. The hot pink iron costs a little more, but the difference is donated to a Breast Cancer Awareness organization. So, for $205 ($10 more than the black one) I purchased the HOT PINK ghd STYLER.
The iron is 1 inch in width, which is just right for my shoulder length hair. The plates are black in color, and made of ceramic which is important when it comes to protecting the hair from damage. It is very simple to operate since there is just one little switch that says "on" or "off". I don't have to fool with temperature adjustment like I did with some other irons in the past. The iron's handle is ergonomic in design and it fits comfortably into my hand, which is very improtant to me because I use my hands alot in my work so they tire easily if they feel strained. It heats up VERY quickly (about 45-60 seconds I believe) and a little red indicator light will start to blink when it's ready for use.
The plates get extremely hot so it smooths my hair beautifully and quickly. Some of the other irons I owned would take 2-3, sometimes more, swipes over my hair before it was smooth. The ghd leaves each section of my hair smooth after one swipe which saves me alot of time in the end. Even though the plates are very hot, I can get the iron really close to my scalp and I have never been burned. I do have to use a brush to catch the hair I'm using the iron on because it's too hot to touch with my hand!
When I straighten my hair I will do it one of two ways: I will have the ends stick straight and blunt, or I will curl the ends under slightly. The ghd iron does both of these really well. I don't like to wear my hair flipped out on the ends but I have tried it just to test the iron and it does flip the ends of the hair very easily. Next day touch ups are now super easy and fast! I can usually finish my hair in 5 minutes when all I have to do is a little touch up.
I have been using the iron almost a year and my hair is still very healthy. One thing I was starting to notice with the CHI iron is that the plates were dulling, and it would pull my hair sometimes resulting in breakage. I have not had this problem at all with the ghd iron.
Sometimes I have to clean the plates on my iron because of product buildup, so I use a cotton ball and some rubbing alcohol which works wonderfully. I always had a very difficult time cleaning the plates on the CHI iron. I keep my iron stored in a flat iron case/cover to protect it during storage in my bathroom cabinet. After paying that much money for it I absolutely want to keep it in pristine condition, and prevent it from getting all scratched up. Thankfully it still looks brand new.
Overall I am very pleased with this purchase, and would recommend the ghd styler flat iron to anyone who uses a flat iron regularly. It has been a great product and money well spent. The quality and performance of this iron have made it well worth the money. I also really like that it is pink :) This was a nice departure from all the black irons I had in the past, but it also felt good to know that I gave to a good cause when I chose the pink version.
Here are some specs from the manufacturer for anyone interested:
