gamerjet's Full Review: GT Pro Series for Nintendo Wii
Enter GT Pro Series, a hip new racing game from Ubisoft for the Nintendo Wii. Ubisoft has made many racing games over the years, mostly rather poor in my opinion, so how does GT Pro Series fare? Lets grab the keys, get in, and hit the track...
GT Pro Series offers up the standard race game modes which include: Championship, Quick Race, Time Attack, VS, and Drift Combo. Championship, the main mode of GT, offers quite a bit of content. With 36 different tournaments, each consisting of 3 races, and 15 License challenges, there's plenty of content here to keep any racer in action for a few weeks. Championship mode divides the tournaments and license challenges into four classes: Beginner, Intermediate, High speed, and Professional. To advance to the next class, you must score at least a bronze trophy or better in every tournament in the previous class to unlock the next class. However, before you can actually race in the upper classes of Intermediate , High speed, and Professional, you must pass 5 different license challenges which are simply timed events that challenge you to reach the goal before time runs out. Usually pretty easy to beat, they offer a nice break from the tournament races.
Each tournament has certain car requirements, so only cars that meet these requirements can actually be raced in that tournament. It's pretty neat actually, because it will challenge you to develop a new game plan since you can't just use one car in particular to progress. If you do well enough in a tournament you can score a trophy; either bronze, silver, or gold. If you score a bronze, you may unlock a new track. If you score a silver you'll unlock a new car part. If you can score a gold, you'll get a new car part and a brand new car. Scoring a gold in every tournament and license challenge proves to be quite a challenge!
Quick Race lets you race any unlocked cars on any unlocked tracks. You can modify the time of day and the weather too. Pretty cool since it can actually change the difficulty of the track. Time Attack lets you race for the best time and also allows for saving ghosts and replays. A really neat feature of Time Attack is that you can race your saved ghosts. If you have saved multiple ghosts for a track, you can race all of your ghosts at the same time if you wish. VS mode is a blast! It allows up to four players to race each other. The final mode, Drift Combo, challenges you to score as many consecutive drifts as possible. If do well enough, you can set high-scores.
Overall, the game modes are solid. An Online mode would have been sweet, but unfortunately that just wasn't possible when GT was released. So, how's the racing? Great! The cars all handle differently, some drift easier than others, and they all vary in the top speed area too. The 20 (10 forward and 10 reverse)tracks are great too. Ubisoft did a great job with each track layout. Each provides a good variety of straightways, hair-pin turns and surprises to keep it interesting. The tracks are available in one of four types. Either circuit, highway, city, or mountain.
Even the controls are solid. You just hold the Wiimote horizontally (or you can place the Wiimote in the included steering wheel accessory; more on this late...) and move it either to the left or right; just as if you were driving for real! To accelerate you hold down the 2 button and to brake just hit the 1 button. You can also view behind your car by holding down the B button. The included steering wheel accessory is pretty cool and it adds a lot of realism to the game. It's a solid accessory that really adds a great value to the overall package.
The music in GT is an awesome mix of techno, with some rock thrown in. It's all instrumental, no lyrics; which is just perfect in my opinion. So far so good, right? Well, now its time for the bad... The sound effects are just awful in this game! The sound effects sound like someone is screaming at different pitches and at different volume levels. Quite surprising when the music is so solid. Thankfully, you turn the sound effects off!
The graphics are just OK, they really don't push the Wii. I would say the graphics are on par with maybe a late generation N64 game. They are cel-shaded, not realistic like most race games. They aren't that bad, but it's pretty easily to tell that Ubisoft didn't put that 100% in like they should have. Graphics and sound effects aside, this game is still a blast, and the included steering wheel really adds that extra value. I have had a lot of fun with GT Pro Series and I think everyone should at least try it out. If you enjoy racing games, it's a good buy for your Nintendo Wii game library.
