| ldusold's Full Review: Garden Claw Gold |
I guess it's safe to say that Spring has finally sprung here in NY State. It's time for some yard work. Our yard has pot holes in it yet again.... Yes, I said pot holes.... why? Because there are 2 dogs living here that just love to dig, and do you think that they listen to me when I tell them to stop doing that? Of course they don't.
I need to loosen some dirt and fill the holes. The Claw just might be what I need to use. Last spring / summer I decided I would need to till the dirt up a little in order to level it, but to hire someone to come and do that, why bother for such a small area. I thought I would give the Garden Claw a try. So that's just what I did. I went and bought the Garden Claw Gold from Lowes, and after a few simple steps for assembling it, I started right away. I worked and I worked, day after day until I had torn up the entire back yard using the Garden Claw Gold. (Thank God my yard isn't that big)
What is the Garden Claw Gold?
The Garden Claw Gold is made out of steel, making it strong, it has 4 diamond shaped twisted blades or spears (claws) on the bottom, which are used for digging into the soil. This Garden Claw is said to cultivate and loosen your soil. It's great for getting those weeds pulled. The handles are sort of like the old fashion bicycle handles with vinyl comfort grips. If you use the Garden Claw excessively like I did, you could end up having sore hands like I did. Hey you may even build calluses. Using the Garden Claw for simple gardening projects the way it was intended shouldn't cause you any pain or calluses though, so don't worry about that. The Garden Claw Gold is electro-coated, and hasn't rusted at all even though I have left it outside while it was raining several times last year.
How does the Garden Claw work?
The idea of the Garden Claw is a great idea. It really does do what the commercials on TV show you. It digs your soil, it loosens weeds, it's a great way to loosen things up so they can be moved with ease. It's a big help to any gardener and saves your back. I am a person who has always had back problems, and even though I worked with the Garden Claw excessively, my back was still in good shape. Thank God you can adjust the height on this great gardening tool. I was happy about that.
The idea is to stand wherever you are going to need to loosen or dig something, and just sort of jab this claw straight down into the dirt, once you've done that, just give it a twist, and pull it out. You only need to twist about 1/4 turn, and you will see freshly loosened soil. Jab again, twist again, and you are on a roll. It's so simple to use. For simple projects it's a breeze, for more extensive yard work like what I did, I'd almost say borrow or rent a gas powered tiller, because it takes days to get anything done using this garden tool. It's just not meant for entire yards, even though it held up and handled the job.
As I said earlier, I used the Garden Claw, and I had sore hands, (even though it has the comfort grips) and sore upper arms, but after all my digging / twisting, our yard was ready to be leveled out and new grass planted. Which brings me back to the fact that Spring has sprung.... Our lawn has NO GRASS again... and I have a few more pot holes. Should I use this garden claw again? I am thinking that I will, but I don't think I will go to the extent that I went with it last summer. It's a great tool for your average gardener, but I don't don't recommend it for an entire lawn, it's not going to be the tool you need to work on those bigger projects. It will work, don't get me wrong, but it requires a lot of work and it's time consuming as well. Just keep in mind if you have rocks or things like that near the surface of your soil, when you jab the claw into the dirt, it won't be funny. It may not harm the claw much, but it's going to jolt you! Be careful, and use it as directed, and you will have a garden tool that will last you for years. It does have a 5 year guarantee just in case. But if treated reasonably, I don't see anyone needing to worry about that.
Considering I don't have a garden, I bought the Garden Claw Gold for lawn purposes only. I can tell you, however, that I can see how easy this tool would work for your gardens. I works great for working fertilizers or compost into the soil. Simply put your fertilizer there, and twist. There you go, you don't have to put much effort into it. The Garden Claw Gold is an awesome tool for any gardener, and it saves your back as well. Even though it was excessively used last spring, I think I will give it another shot now, after all it's tough enough to handle the job. So why not use it? I found this to be a great addition to my tool collection, I don't think any gardener will ever find something more simple to use, at least not until someone invents something better. This is a gem!
