| myoptical's Full Review: Garden Claw Gold |
Garden Claw Gold (GCG). Sounds like a premium tool eh? I can say that it does what it is intended to do pretty well. If you have to do more than 10 minutes of work with this tool your phalanges (finger bones) will regret it!
Assembly - Done in 120 seconds! Assembly includes connecting the oddly-shaped handle to the neck and then connecting the "golden" claw to the bottom of the neck. I used wrenches to assemble this garden tool. After-the-fact, I'm considering using my drill and some attachments as it keeps working itself loose. It isn't falling off or anything, but I don't like to feel the parts slipping or hear them rattling while I'm using it.
Functionality Pro's - Works best in dirt and prepped beds to aerate the soil. It loosens the soil in such a way that weeds/grass is easy to pick out; root and all. However, I live in Texas. There is an (unfortunately for me) abundance of limestone and a deficiency of dirt deeper than a few inches. For my prepped beds, it works like a hot knife on butter. We use it to remove grass rhizomes from the beds that run alongside the sidewalk. Make sure the dirt is not completely dry as it won't break apart when using this tool.
Functionality Con's - Extended use requires work gloves. Not thinking that I needed to, I ran this GCG through a 1.5 hour session in our garden. The next day I had a blister the size of a silver dollar in the palm of my right hand and another the size of a quarter on the side of my left thumb. That's what I get for fighting TX dirt w/o the proper protection.....! The handle's shape doesn't offer a premium grip. The cheap plastic covering on the handle does not contribute to powering through tougher spots that can't be accessed with a tiller.
There isn't much more to be said on this tool, lest I be accussed of being verbose. I will still use this tool as I don't think there is another in the market that is comparable. If you find one, email me and let me know.
Happy gardenin',
John
