Pros: it works, it's fun.
Cons: can never replace a shovel
The Bottom Line: P.S. Watch out for your toes!!! You don't want to ram one of those tines through your toe-nail.

| Caspian's Full Review: Garden Claw Gold |
You ever wanted to try one of those "one-of-a-kind, all-in-one, neatest-thing-in-the-world, newest fancy-pancy" gadgets that they take an hour to advertise on TV?
Well, the Garden Claw Gold is one of these. I saw it advertised once, and being one that does an aweful lot of dirt work in the spring, I decided I needed to get one of these.
I bought one at WalMart for $30.00 You can also find them periodically at Lowe's or Home Depot.
Description:
A picture is worth (a lot) and if you look at that tiny picture to the right and slightly below this line, you will get an idea of what the tool looks like. It has "handlebars" that point the opposite way, with a rubber grip. Then a long bar (about 30 inches) with tines attached at the bottom. The bar connects to the handle and the tines with bolts. There are several holes for the bolts, so you can adjust the height of the tool about 6 inches, shorter or longer.
There are four larger tines twisted clockwise (looking down at the tines) with four smaller ones in the center.
The whole unit, save the rubber grip on the handles, is made of steel with a special coating to prevent rusting.
Purpose of this Great Invention
To work the soil.
How to Use
Hold on to the handle with both hands, place the tine-end where you want to loosen the soil, and with a clockwise turning motion and slight downward pressure you will loosen the soil. Continue along your whole garden until done or completely exhausted, whichever you choose.
The Truth of the Matter is.....
I really do recommend this tool. I used it quite a bit this year in my landscaping work, and I liked the way it performed. But it's not all magic. Unlike the commercials it's not the solution to all your problems.
---} You won't see oxygen-rich air going into your soil as you in slow motion fluff up your garden
---} You also won't see nitrogen and other nutrients churning into the soil as the Garden Claw happily and effortlessly dances along the ground.
---} You won't be sipping ice-cold lemonade as you merrily dig along.
---} What you will see is some hard packed dirt that you gotta loosen, and it's going to take a little elbow grease no matter how you do it.
Some things I really liked about the Garden Claw that makes it worth owning:
--} It gives you a break from the other tools and your body is doing a completely different motion than when digging with a shovel. It exercises different muscles.
--} Unlike a shovel, you aren't turning over a massing clump of soil, and you don't have to bend your back very much
--} You can work the soil between plants without hurting them
--} With nasty weeds like dandelions, I can place the tines right on top of the weed, twist a little to loosen the soil, and then with my hand I can effortlessly pull the weed up root and all.
In conclusion, I'll say that the Garden Claw Gold will keep a permanent place in my garden/landscaping tools, but I still won't ever go to a big job with just the claw and not a shovel. Man! Shovels sure are a great invention.
