Much as I hate to fly in the face of public opinion, I have to disagree with the four other fine reviewers who love this tool. Perhaps, if I were lucky enough to be possessed of beautiful, black humus in my garden instead of the rocky, lumpen, red clay the Virginia piedmont is famous for, I, too would be singing hymns of praise to the Garden Claw Gold.
TAP ROOTS, A GARDENER'S NIGHTMARE
If you garden, even a little bit, you are acquainted with the dreaded tap roots that hide under dandelions, pokeweed, burdock, thistle, and other noxious weeds. When I first saw the Garden Claw Gold on TV, I thought it was designed just for me. For days before I finally got to the local Lowe's to purchase one, I dreamed of weed-free flower beds, lawn, and pastures.
It was not to be, or at least not for me and my flinty, shallow, soil. The prodigious tap root of a healthy pokeweed has absolutely no trouble at all penetrating two feet or more into this so-called soil. Unfortunately, my game little Garden Claw Gold was stopped before it got down an inch. Just too many rock shards cemented together with red clay for Goldy to do any good.
A GENTLE WARNING
I have no doubt at all that, given reasonable soil, Garden Claw Gold is a wonderful and useful tool. If, however, you are already on your second garden spade of the year and still haven't finished planting your tomatoes, this tool will be a waste of dreams and money. Yes, it is well designed and very sturdy. It is also easy to assemble and tote around. If left in the grass, the yellow and blue color should alert you before you mow over it, too. Garden Claw Gold was not designed for hard, stoney soils, for these problem soils, save your money for a small back hoe.
Please note, I cannot recommend this product to anyone with really hard and rocky soil. You know who you are. If you are blessed with loess several feet thick or nice sandy coastal soil, this is your tool. Piedmont dwellers need not apply.
