| Ohara1861's Full Review: Garden Claw Gold |
My garden was in pitiful shape especially since I didn't grow anything in it last year and came upon it this spring full of weeds and other nasty unidentifiable stuff.
I couldn't wait for someone with a tiller to come so I went to my local hardware store to see if they had anything that would be inexpensive, hand-operated and stir up the soil.
The only thing I could find that matched all 3 needs was the Garden Claw Gold. I usually am very skeptical of things like this especially since I had seen it advertised on TV and it seemed too good to be true. But given that I was desperate, I still bought it. I was told by an employee of the store that this cost $49.95 but it was run up at $34.95. I'm liking this already.
I read the box in the car and what they advertised, again seemed to good. No real effort to dig up your soil, easy to use plus it pulled up weeds. Yeah, right! Upon arriving home, I opened the box to find it in 3 distinct pieces; the handles, the post and the claw. It also came with assembly instructions and 2 nuts and bolts. You have to slip the handle onto the post and insert the nut and bolt. Again you perform this procedure with the claw attaching it to the post. You can choose 3 different lengths for the claw depending on how deeply you want it to go into the dirt.
Assembling took not even 5 minutes and I set myself outside to put this thing to the test. The box says that you don't even have to put much effort into turning this and don't have to fully insert it into the soil, just place it on top of the soil and give it a half turn.
Believe it or not, this claw worked perfectly and effortlessly. My soil is pretty dry, full of weeds and compacted down nicely or unnicely since it hasn't been used. I placed the claw on top of the dirt, did one twist and it broke up the dirt along with some weeds. I just continued placing the claw onto the dirt, twisting slightly and voila, tilled soil. It even dug up a root that was an inch in diameter and about 8 feet in length that I never knew was there and was about 4 inches under the soil.
The Claw is simple and easy to use. It requires very little effort on a person's part although I could feel my upper arms getting a work-out. Holding the handles was also very comfortable and seemed natural. I would recommend wearing gloves of some type as I could feel my hands slipping against the metal and know that if I had continued doing this for an extended period of time, would have gotten a blister or two.
This was worth every penny and is totally made of metal so I am fully confident that it won't break and will be used for many seasons. It loosens soils, pulls up weeds and aerates the soil. Now only if it would plant those seeds for me...
