jeronimo479's Full Review: Garmin GPSMap 60c Handheld GPS Receiver
I have had this unit for two years. I have been really unhappy with the Garmin GPSMap 60. It functions adequately enough, but the description, "Monochrome" is misplaced. Somebody though it would be a great idea to actually have three colors: white, black and dark green. Some of the menu items are black on dark green, which is all but impossible to read in ANY kind of light. The back light is very power hungry and not very bright. An electroluminescent back-light would have been a much better choice.
The unit does not have any memory expansion capabilities. It has 24MB of Flash, which was enough to hold topography information for 15 map files from the US Topo 2008 DVD, enough to cover me from Ashburn Va to Ohiopyle PA. If the unit supported SD Flash cards, I could have as much memory as I wanted for map support. The cards don't have to be easy access either. Burying them inside the battery compartment would have been easy enough.
I use this GPS receiver on my kayak, bicycle, and motorcycle, where the water resistance come in very handy. I also use it for camping and hiking expeditions.
I really like the built in Alarm clock, since it is handy to multi-tool when on hiking trips.
The center select button has a "straight in" position, but it is nearly impossible to actuate without up, down, left or right being selected first.
The weight is average, not too noticeable when hiking. And the trees don't kill this one like they did my Etrex Vista.
The programmable displays are really convenient. I like being able to show exactly what I need on each menu.
The Fish and game calendars perform absolutely no function for me. I don't fish or hunt. Even so, I wouldn't see how any person who considers themselves a fisherman would need this feature anyhow.
The Sun and Moon charts are handy for determining moon light availability when I go camping.
There is a very handy "Man Over Board" feature that allows you to get back to where you just were, very effectively.
In summary, get a color display model since the display on this one makes it very unappealing.
