davelaura's Full Review: Garmin GPS 12 Handheld GPS Receiver
I really wished my husband would write these because he knows so much more than I do. But I will have to do. My husband (fiance at the time) had been wanting a GPS badly. He had hinted to his parents for his birthday but they didn't catch on I guess. Then Christmas came around and he wanted one. No one got him one. He would had brought it himself but planning a wedding and everything there was not enough money. Come on, he brought me my engagement ring that Christmas. I really wanted to get him the GPS for Christmas but since I knew we were getting married on January 11 I decided that this would be a perfect wedding gift from me.
Being a female and everything you are probably wondering how I made the decision to buy the Garmin GPS. First I had been raised around boats of all kinds since an infant so I know a little about boating, sailing, and fishing. Actually I took my dad's and uncle's advice on the brand. My dad is a sailor and my uncle is a captain. Yes, a boat captain. He recommends the Magellan but for the money I had he also recommended the Garmin.
So off to Wal-Mart I went. I was so nervous about buying this item because I wanted it to be perfect. How nervous was I? Well I locked my keys in my car not once but twice. The locksmith that came to the store was laughing the second time I locked the keys in the car. I explained to him I was getting married in two days and he understood why I was losing my mind. I rushed over to the Sporting Goods Section in hopes that they would still have the GPS in stock. Man, I was lucky. There was only one left and it was on sale for $138.00. I couldn't believe that I actually got it.
The surprise on my soon to be husband's face the next night could tell it all. During the rehearsal dinner I gave my husband his gift first. I couldn't wait till he opened it. Of course he made me open my gift first. Once again he surprises me with a pearl necklace. I am on my toes about to burst to see the expression on his face when he opens it. He finally opens it and I can tell that I got the right one.
My husband does a lot of off shore fishing and duck hunting in the Mobile Delta so the GPS gets used a lot. He has all of these numbers punched into the memory so all he has to do is bring it up and it will take him to the right place. It is very reliable.
One season the fog had rolled into Mobile Bay very thick. I believe a lot of people use the expression like pea soup. You couldn't see a thing. My husband and his friend were out in the Delta getting ready to duck hunt that morning. They were lost so he used the GPS to get him to his safe location and it did just exactly what it was supposed to do. There has been a couple of times he has been coming in from a late fishing trip out in the gulf and the rain is boring so hard that you can't see in front of you. Once again he used the GPS to guide him into the dock.
The GPS was brought several years back and it is still working like the first day my husband used it. Of course it works better now since the government did something with the satellite. Oh so you are wondering how the GPS works. It works by a satellite in outer space. Neat!
