barriegibson's Full Review: Garmin GPS 12 Handheld GPS Receiver
I've had mine for 2 years. I had a friend that paid a lot for a top of the range etrek. Where it mattered, locking on to satellites and staying locked, it didn't seem any better than my humble GPS12. I am currently comparing it with a twice-the-price GPS76 and again, the new fangled one, where it matters, doesn't seem any better. Probably has more features and WAAS but they're no use at all if the GPS hasn't got a clue where you are. So to summarise, don't expect miracles from GPS. I use my GPS12 in my car and it has been very useful, nice big letters for easy visibility, all the buttons on the front so easy to press when driving. I've used it when walking but been disappointed when even in lightly wooded area to see the signal lost. Ho hum. In cities it often loses signal due to high buildings but I accept that for the price. When I want to drive somewhere strange I enter the coordinates and tell it like a dog - go to ! It's a bit chunky and even though the size is comparable to the GPS 76 it feels like a brick. Battery life is not good. But I don't leave it on. I use it to mark positions that I would like to see again (like my car) and if I get lost I can use it to help. Always take a pocket compass for those moments when it does lose coverage. I use mine as a an extra tool. I am overall very happy (especially as mine was a cheap refurbished model) because it works well enough to be very useful.
