keyrse's Full Review: Garmin eTrex H Handheld GPS Receiver
We bought this unit when we decided as a family to start moving and getting out a bit more. One focus was that it was easy enough for the kids (12&14) to read and understand. This unit did fit the bill.
One of the first steps with this is to set up where your home coordinates are. It doesn't take a lot of work, but you do need to be sure that the unit has a full view of the sky.
After the unit gets oriented, it is pretty simple to use. The kids got into Geocaching, which is a digitized Easter egg hunt. No big prize at the end, just the satisfaction you did find it.
The screen is large and very clear even in the bright sunlight. It seems rather tough given the tumble down the gravel path. Just one minor scratch, but it didn't affect its performance.
The case is well-built. The sides have a rubberized feel that makes it comfortable in your hand. As I said earlier, the unit has been dropped, but never popped apart or shown any signs of weakness in product manufacture.
Battery life depends on how much you use it and what kind of batteries you use of course. We use NIMH rechargeables but always carry a backup of standard batteries. We also use the car charger accessory from time to time if we are on an extended trip.
This product is perfect for those who walk trails, Geocache, and do other light outdoor work. It is easy to use and pretty darn accurate.
