I bought my eTrex to help me with my racing homing pigeon hobby. I wanted a small, inexpensive, accurate GPS receiver to help me know exactly how far away from home I was taking my birds for training. Knowing the bearing from the release point to home was also useful, as I am able to know if the pigeons are heading in the right direction or not.
While waiting for the eTrex to arrive in the mail, I discovered Geocaching, and I must admit, I've used my GPS eTrex for Geocaching much more than for any other purpose.
I found the eTrex very easy to use, and within minutes of its arrival, I was already punching in waypoints, marking positions and navigating to them and back in my neighborhood park. By that weekend, I had already found a couple of Geocaches.
The ease of use, compact design, rugged body, and strong lanyard make the eTrex the a good choice for a general use, entry level GPS receiver. The compact design unfortunately makes the eTrex a little less sensitive. I've read that the low-profile antenna used with the eTrex is less sensitive than the protruding design you'll see on other brands. The lack of screen real-estate also will force you to be constantly swapping screen to view all the data you might be interest in seeing.
Oh, and of course, the bright yellow body will be sure to attract attention if you use the eTrex for urban Geocaching.
I would (and have already) recommend the eTrex to people interested in getting started with GPS.
