The Vista C is really a hand-held unit for hiking, biking, etc. first and everything else second.
It does have a base map which has major streets and highways in the US. You can download other Garmin maps, sold separately, (up to 24 MB maximum) to the unit, and it will do street autorouting based on all available maps if they contain routing information (e.g. street maps, not topographic or marine maps).
So it works for road navigation, but the small screen and lack of voice commands (either from you to the unit or vice versa) makes it by far not the best option if road travel is your main objective.
The owner's manual claims the unit is water resistant according to EC 60529 IPX7 standards (submersible in one meter of water for up to 30 mins.) but I haven't tried to prove that.
The Vista has everything the Legend does plus a built-in electronic compass and barometric altimeter. (This is true of both the color and monochrome versions of the Legend and Vista). To me the barometric altimeter (which is of course in addition to the elevation computed by the GPS triangulation, which isn't nearly as accurate as the latitude/longitude computations) is just a 'nice to know' feature but the compass is essential for hiking. Otherwise you have to be moving to know what direction you're facing, or carry a separate stand-alone compass.
Hope this answers your questions... Actually before I buy almost anything nowadays, I download and browse through the owner's manual, which most manufacturers post online. For the Vista C the URL is http://www.garmin.com/manuals/eTrexVistaC_OwnersManual.pdf.

Hoping for more info. (Reply to this comment)

Does this Etrex have highway and road maps?
Is it meant for just hiking & camping?
How good is it for driving navigation?
Is it waterproof like the original eTrex?
How does it compare to the eTrex Legend?
