Pros:Mild scent, absorbs quickly, not greasy, it is fading age spots
Cons:It oozes out of the cap with each use. When stopped spots darken again.
The Bottom Line: A solid performer, and hopefully it will continue to work for me as long as I use a sunscreen
Everyone tells me that I don't look my age, but my hands do give it away that I am in my 50's. I spent too much time in the sun in my younger years, and my skin is paying for it today.

The backs of my hands, especially my right, have dark age spots. My good friends tell me they are nothing more than freckles, but I am embarrassed by them. My dermatologist gave me a prescription cream that was supposed to lighten age spots, but it had a very foul odor and I simply could not tolerate it.
After seeing commercials for Garnier Fructis Skin Renew Dark Spot Corrector on TV, I decided to give it a try. The commercials are very convincing! I found this product at Target for $13.99, so the price is definitely what I would consider affordable.
It comes in a 1.7 ounce green tube that looks like it is made of metal. The cap is a totally different design for me, and I was a bit confused about how to open it. In the picture it appears the white cap is tall, but it is actually two pieces. You have to twist them apart, then remove a small white ring, then screw the two caps back together again.

How It Works
The box states that this product "Helps break apart pigmentation clusters" which result in fading of spots and leaving healthy cells to even the skin tone.
I will say right up front that I do not care for the way this cream dispenses. Have you ever had too much cream or ointment come out of a metal tube? (This often happens with the cortisone creams we use). That is what happens when I squeeze the tube, even when I apply very light pressure on it.
After I gently squeeze out a small amount the product keeps oozing out from the pointed cap. It has a fairly thin consistency, which just compounds the problem. It is colored white but there is always a slight build up of dried product around the base of the cap, and this is a dark yellow color.
The prescription products my dermatologist wanted me to try contain an active ingredient called hydroquinone, which has recently come under fire, especially in Europe. Garnier Fructis Skin Renew Dark Spot Corrector does not contain hydroquinone. It has a light almost citrus scent, and while it doesn't smell good, it isn't nearly offensive as hydroquinone.
True to claims this cream is not at all greasy and it absorbs into the skin easily and quickly. It's not as moisturizing as I had hoped, but it is helping to fade my age spots, especially on my left hand (the hand that was not as sun damaged). The directions say you can apply it to the face and neck daily, and while I do use it on two spots caused by a condition called melasma, I also use it on the backs of my hands.
The back of the box suggests using Skin Renew Anti-Sun-Damage Daily Moisturizer Lotion SPF 28 along with this dark spot corrector. A sunscreen is essential if you are trying to fade or prevent age spots. I wish the dark spot corrector itself contained a sunscreen, but it does not.
I've only used this for a couple of weeks but I am seeing some results, even better results than with my prescription strength cream. Contrary to claims, I don't have skin that is instantly brighter and more even toned, but I am encouraged with the spot fading results thus far and will update this review when I have finished the tube.
A Note About Melasma
My dermatologist diagnosed me with melasma, which is skin darkening due to hormonal changes. I found it interesting that the box mentions hormonal fluctuations as one of the causes of dark spots and discolorations on the surface of the skin. It would appear that this product targets melasma spots as well as age spots.
A Note About Ingredients
I was happy to find a skin lightening beauty product that did not contain hydroquinone. This cream is a blending of nature and chemicals. It not only contains vitamin C, but it also contains vitamin E, glycerin, citrus and lemon fruit extract, gentiana lutena extract, and geraniol (a natural fragrance ingredient). There are a host of chemical sounding ingredients as well, including preservatives such as sodium methylparaben.
~~Special thanks to Shantel for adding this to the database for me!~~
Update: After using this product for several months I can say it certainly does fade dark spots. I stopped using it for a few weeks and my spots darkened again, so this seems to be a product that needs to be used on an regular basis in order to be effective. It has not faded my spots completely, but the difference is significant.
