My husband and I were out shopping for a novelty birthday present when we ran across this dispenser on clearance in the wine glass section. We thought it was so cute so we decided to get it for us rather than for our guest of honor.
We were so excited about the novelty and discounted price ($10) that we didn't really consider if we had a need for this type of thing. I'm sure that we would get a lot more use out of it if we actually drank whiskey. We drink frou-frou drinks which are made by the pitcher so this isn't really practical for our needs. It also really needs a dark liquor inside for a more dramatic look.
Description The pump is made by Godinger. The purpose of this container is to fashionably store 1 liter of alcohol. Rather than pouring yourself a drink, it is pumped through the hose for a novel approach.
The round cap at the top can be removed to expose the small opening for pouring the alcohol into the container. The cap says, “FILL 'ER UP” and it has a picture of a lowball glass with five square ice cubes and a stir stick engraved into the cap on both sides.
The retention area is clear plastic and has 100 – 900 marked on the outside. It is sitting on a silver chrome base. It says “HIGH OCTANE CONTAINS ALCOHOL” on the bottom half.
The hose comes out of the bottom and it hangs on the side like a gas pump. The pump is used by pulling the trigger just like putting gas into the car.
Getting it to work This doesn't have a pump to push the alcohol through the hose. It works with the flow of gravity. If the liquid is not coming out, lower the hose below the container so the liquid can flow.
Does it leak? My concern is that my bottle of alcohol cost more than this gadget did. I have a problem trusting it, but I have no reason to believe it will leak and it has not leaked at all during my usage. In fact, it's sometimes very difficult to get the liquid out so I think the way it's pressurized will keep it from leaking.
Cleaning It is very difficult to clean because it doesn't come off of the base and the lid on the top is only a small opening. Ideally you'd just clean it once before use then not really need to clean it since it's meant to be a storage container. If you do clean it before putting it in storage, it does take a while to let the inside dry.
The outside is made of chrome so it gets finger prints and dust all over it. Chrome is best cleaned with something other than soap and water. It's a challenge to keep the chrome polished, and even more difficult to get rid of water spots on the inside.
Storing Ideally this would be stored on a shelf with your alcohol and glasses but that will depend on how much clearance you have. This is a very tall piece. It measures 19 inches tall (about an arms length). The base is designed well so there's no chance of it tipping over.
Kids in the house? I am not able to use this because I can't bring myself to leave this sitting out unattended with kids in the house. I can probably get my kids to stay away from it, but we have frequent visitors also. This looks like a toy and what kid wouldn't be intrigued? A toddler would stand lower which would be a perfect level for this pump to flow. It only takes a couple of mouthfuls for it to be toxic to a toddler. This would be best placed in a locked liquor cabinet. Overall This is one of those impulse buys that we would have been better off walking past because it doesn't match our lifestyle. This would make a cute gift for a whiskey drinker but would probably be more meaningful it it were presented with a bottle of booze.
