movieman9000's Full Review: Gears of War for Xbox 360
Definitely the best game I've played on the 360, and the one I've had the most fun playing on as well. This is a total killer app for the system and all of its buzz, and extremely high sales make a whole lotta' sense in the scheme of things. This is a great game.
First off it's fairly difficult, but somehow epic also made it easy to play. The "A" button pretty much does all of your most important moves in the game. You get to cover with "A", you sprint with "A". Your next most important button is the right trigger because you'll be using it often in this game. There's often a ridiculous amount of enemies to combat and a pretty insane amount of extra things you'll have to do to either avoid, or kill them later on in the game.
The first level or act is extremely fun to play through and mixes a whole lot of action elements with interesting elements from survival horror games as well. You'll be a little creeped out while playing this game almost all the time. It's always good to play with another person, even if its online... Online co-op play does honestly help to keep you more calm than you would be otherwise. It definetely gets progressively harder and you'll have to keep doing new things to survive in each level, for instance, in the second level you have to remember to shoot these propane tanks so that you'll have light. If you forget one time, you are eaten alive by the kryll which are creepy little flying death machines. The game's third act is fun, but very difficult, and its also interesting because an enemy that seems to be pretty uselessly easy the entire game is stepped up in this level to being one of the hardest to get past in the game at times. The third act is probably one of the creepiest because of the atmosphere and the fact that you are forced to go into entirely enemy territory for the whole level. The fourth act is extremely exciting and entertaining, but its slightly forgettable as well. The fifth act looks like its gonna be cool, but ends up being lame, short, and pretty darn dissapointing over all. Even the final boss isn't that cool or fun to beat. It's one of the worst last levels for a brilliant game that I've seen. It's forgiveable though. This game has so much going for it other than that.
On-line multiplayer play is pretty fun in this game, and its different than most others. Instead of trying to go for as many players as possible Gears of War goes for a more gritty, personal eight player maximum in online play. It makes the matches interesting and a lot of people really like this games online. I personally prefer Halo 2's large chaotic battle style more, but this works well too. It's very rewarding to chainsaw someone online. Curb stomping someone is also quite fun, and so is shooting someones head off as they lie on the ground, trying to recover. If you think this games single player is brutal, the multi-player is absoulutely insane.
I can't wait until they come out with a sequel to this game, and I'm actually kind of interested in the PC version of the game due to the added fight with the large crab like monster that was not in the 360 version of the game.
Just a warning, as you go up in diffculty levels in the game, it gets much, much harder. I couldn't get past the third level without dying on insane mode. It's a very difficult games and it's sometimes frustrating. Overall though I thought it was a great game and entertained me for a good 6-8 hours, which is short, but oh so sweet. An awesome, kick-a**, game.
