| jps246's Full Review: Gelato Cafe |
Traveling between the original Foxwoods casino complex and the newer, MGM Grand at Foxwoods and looking for a quick snack or maybe a sweet treat? Then you might want to stop at the Gelato Cafe, which is located in the connector between the two casino resorts. It's a quick service restaurant that offers breakfast pastries, gelato along with sandwiches, salads and coffee drinks. A little bit of everything I guess you could say. There isn't anything fancy about the Gelato Cafe, except for perhaps their presentation. The sandwiches and salads are all prepared and displayed in the cases and you find what you are looking for and then order what you'd like. There's no specific dining area for the cafe, just walk up to the counter, order your food and then take it away. On the other side of the connector, up against a series of windows is a seating area that's a mix of tables and lounge chairs where you can eat your meal. For us, we'll do that at times, or just take it with us since we're grabbing something as we're on our way out of the casino. I do actually enjoy sitting in the area though, as the view from the windows is out into the woods and it's interesting to watch all the people going back and forth between Foxwoods and the MGM Grand at Foxwoods. Prices One of the nice things about the Gelato Cafe is that it has fairly reasonable prices for a casino restaurant. Sure, it's more than almost anywhere else (except maybe for an airport), but compared to some of the other places in Foxwoods, it seems reasonable. You'll spend between $2 and $5 for the various pastries, about $5 for the gelato and the sandwiches and salads run anywhere between $8 and $10. For me, between a drink and a sandwich, I generally spend about $10 at the cafe if I'm getting something substantial to eat. Usually though I'm just stopping for the gelato. Like everything at Foxwoods, the Gelato Cafe accepts Dream Card points for your purchases. Those points are earned if you're a member of the players club and you use your card while you gamble. Experiences I like the Gelato Cafe when you're looking for something a bit more involved than just coffee and a danish, but you don't want to be bothered with one of the full service restaurants at Foxwoods. You can get a fairly filling meal really quick and you won't have to spend a ton of money. My biggest problem going up the place is that I can't decide what I want. The salads all look great and there's a ton of different sandwiches, wraps and panini to choose from. The only word of caution is that everything is pre-made (even the panini, they are just toasted when you order them), so if there's something on a sandwich that you don't like, you're going to have to pick it off since you can't have them make one without it. I haven't found this to be too much of a problem, as it has been pretty easy to pick off what I haven't liked. The only time it's a bit of a pain is with the panini so I make sure I order one that has nothing that I wouldn't like it in it. Service speed really depends on how many people are waiting on line in front of you. I've been there when I've been the only customer and other times I've waited in fairly long lines to get something. Generally though it's only a few minutes at the most and the people that I've run across that work there have all been pleasant and helpful as you pick out what you'd like to eat. Final Thoughts I always keep the Gelato Cafe in the back of my mind when I'm at Foxwoods or MGM Grand at Foxwoods. It's a quick, easy and reasonably priced place to get a snack, some gelato or a sandwich. I know I'll be stopping there in the future and if you're in the Foxwoods resort, I'd recommend you stop there if you're looking for something to eat.
