| cheetah1's Full Review: General Electric Superadio III AM/FM |
This is a review of the General Electric superadio that I have owned for several years. It is a medium sized portable radio made in China for GE. The radio has outstanding AM and FM reception along with excellent music and voice fidelity. These types of retro styled portable radios are generally not sold in large department and electronic stores so a good purchase source would be at amazon.com.
My GE superadio is used mainly for FM music reception. The radio has a 6 inch woofer along with a small tweeter speaker. The radios sound carries well outside and also fills up a medium sized room nicely with it's volume level. The lows, mids and highs coming from the two speakers are excellent for talk shows or music listening. The superadio also has outstanding AM reception for pulling in weak stations. The receivers sensitivity with it's 8 inch ferrite rod make it a good choice for pulling in station from hundred of miles away for DX listening. I live in the Southern California area and can pick up stations from the midwest at night that fade in and out. Stations under 500 miles will come in strong at night on the AM bands with no signal fade.
The superadio dimensions are 12 1/2 inches in length by 9 inches high and 3 inches deep. It uses 6 D cells that will last for up to a couple years even if the radio is used quite a bit. The battery compartment cover on my superadio keeps popping open which is annoying. I have tried some modifications on the battery cover without much success. The 6 D cells do put quite a bit of weight on the battery cover. The radio has a medium sized electrical cord built in for home AC use. Trying to coil up the cord up after use in the small space provided can be difficult.
The overall build quality of the GE superadio looks cheap. If the radio takes a spill loaded up with 6 D cells you will no doubt have some damage to the antenna or the on/off switch may break which happened on my radio. As I recently repaired my radio I noticed the superadio had about 15 transistors in the circutry.
The radio has bass and treble knobs on the front panel along with a wide/normal switch for FM listening and an auto frequency control switch which may aide the receivers reception in certain conditions. There is no bass boost on the superadio but it's not needed with the good bass provided with the large 6 inch speaker. The back of the radio has hook ups for an external AM or FM antenna. There is also a grounding terminal that can can be hooked up.
The radio has been priced as low as 35 dollars on amazon.com recently although the usual price seems to hover around that 45 dollar mark. I recommend the superadio as a nice alternative to the stereo boom boxes that load up the shelves in the electronic sections of stores. The radio will last a long time if not abused. The battery life is outstanding and the radios low price make it easy to replace if needed.
