Cons:No problems here

The Bottom Line: GE Built-In GSD3400 Series dishwashers are quiet, well-built, and great-performing machines at a price that's right.

The dishwasher that came with our house must have been the original, and the house was built in 1986. It was clunky, didn’t wash worth a darn, and the drying cycle was kaput. I dreaded unloading it because I knew I’d either have to dry everything by hand or re-wash it. Like my Dad used to say, “Worthless as teats on a boar hog.” Enough was enough, so we hit the largest appliance emporium in the city. After 2 hours of cussing, discussing, and comparison, we opted for purchasing a GE Built-In GSD3400 Series, AKA the GE Nautilus. They all have a nickname, you know. It helps keep up with the myriad of model numbers. Anyway. . . It seemed to have all the bells & whistles at a really decent price, and was a brand we trusted. At that point, anything was better than the albatross currently wasting space in our kitchen.

Physical Description

The GE Built-In GSD3400 Series is a standard built-in dishwasher, measuring 34”H x 24”W x 25 ”D, and the height with legs extended is a full 35”. They come in the basic white, black, and beige, but panel and trim kits are available separately. The door latch is the center throw type, and the control panel features a combination touch pad and dial system.

The top rack of this dishwasher features a deep, tiered rack system with glass racks on each side – one side is wider to accommodate larger glassware. Some models in this series also include a cup shelf that can be placed up or down to add flexibility. Through the middle, there are a series of “utility shelves” which consist of long and short prongs, and “valleys” with varying depth. This top rack is very versatile for placing small plates, lids, plastic containers, large utensils, etc.

In the bottom rack, there is ample space for large items, as well as smaller spaces for bowls, cake plates, and other small items. The silverware basket is easily removable, and has 6 deep wells for lots of silverware. Some models in this series are equipped with a basket that can be split, and some have covers available for securing lightweight items such as sippy cup valves from blowing out. In the door are the standard main detergent cup, overflow cup, and a capped well for rinse aid products.

There are 2 rotating wash arms – top and bottom. The top arm spins in a stationary position, but the bottom arm has a sprayer wand that extends in phases during the wash cycle to provide 5 levels of cleaning. This is a feature GE calls the PowerScrub system.

Features

* Dual water filtration system
* HotStart option that preheats the water before the wash cycle begins
* Delayed Start – can delay the wash cycle anywhere from 1 to 6 hours
* QuietDesign sound package – includes insulation and QuietPower motor to reduce loud and annoying dishwasher sounds
* Piranha Disposer – grinds leftover food into small particles, making them easier to wash away

Cycles & Settings

The Owner’s Manual has some really great info on these features I thought warranted a mention here. The cycles and settings are set via a combination of pressing settings on the control pad and using the dial. Both this touch pad and dial are clearly marked for each setting, which reduces confusion.

* Pots & Pans or Heavy Wash – Uses 10.2 gallons of water and has a 68 minute cycle
* Light Wash – Uses 7.3 gallons in a 68 minute cycle
* Normal Wash – Uses 8.7 gallons, also with a 68 minute cycle
* Rinse Only – Uses 2.8 gallons on a 9 minute cycle – use as a pre-wash with no detergent
* Hi-Temp Wash
* Plate Warmer – warming cycle is 32 minutes
* Heated Dry – Can be turned on and off as desired, and when on, adds 31 minutes to the cycle
* Short Wash (there was no information on the length of this cycle)
* HotStart - Uses an additional 1.5 gallons of water and adds 30 minutes to the wash cycle
* Reset – Puts settings back to default

Installation

Installation took the professional we hired about an hour, including removal of the old clunker. It would’ve taken Tim the Tool Man (the husband) at least twice that. If you go the self-installation route, detailed picture-guided instructions are included are normally included in addition to the Owner’s Manual, but if they are not, they are available online at www.geappliance.com or by calling the toll-free call center number, 800-626-2000.

Warranty

GE offers 3 warranties with the GSD3400 Series including a full 1-year warranty on the entire dishwasher for in-home service, parts, and labor, and a 2-year warranty for parts on the water distribution system. To sweeten the deal a little more, there is also a full 10-year warranty for service, parts, and labor on the tub and door liner. Of course, certain things are not covered under the warranty, such as improper installation, abuse, or “acts of God” damage. Service contracts are also available for when warranties run out. Details on what is and is not covered under these warranties are available in the Owner’s Manual, online, or via the call center. For service, call toll-free at 800-GE-CARES.

Care & Maintenance

The GSD3400 Series stays pretty clean on it’s own, but sometimes the tub liner can get a little stained and possibly a tad smelly as the years go by. The Owner’s Manual states to wipe down interior and exterior with a sponge or soft cloth using non-abrasive cleansers, but I think the ideal stuff to use is Cascade Plastic Booster. I run an empty dishwasher on the hot cycle about once a month with a dispenser full of this product, and my dishwasher looks and smells as clean and new as the day we bought it. The Owner’s Manual also provides details on protection against freezing and air gap maintenance.

Owner’s Manual

As you can see, the Owner’s Manual is a handy thing to keep. It offers picture-guided details on just about everything you can think of for this dishwasher series, including a helpful troubleshooting guide, tips for getting the best performance from your dishwasher, and contact details for help, satisfaction, and service. If you happen to lose your manual, they are available online and by calling the toll-free call center number.

My Thoughts

We’ve had our GE Built-In GSD3400 for about 2 years and have been quite pleased with it. I like the varied energy-efficiency settings, as they allow me to get the level of clean I desire. It cleans everything very well using proper settings, and is quiet and powerful – it will blow over travel mugs and plastics if you don’t anchor them well. We’ve not had too big a problem with complete drying, except for cups and glassware that have a distinct indentation on the bottom. The control panel and dial system are clearly marked and very easy to use. It is very easy to keep sparkling clean, and I’m happy to say we have never had a single problem with it. This poor thing gets put to the test several times a week, loaded to the gills, and gives a solid performance each and every time.

We chose a model from this particular series because it has all the features and capacity we needed for our family at a comfortable price of $325. The warranties that came with it made it an ever better choice. We will definitely consider more GE appliances for our next major buy, and will definitely consider this same dishwasher series again for any new home we buy.
