When you buy a fifteen year-old house, the question is not if you will need to replace appliances, but when and in what order. In our case we looked at the kitchen and decided the refrigerator was the first to go. After reviewing the major consumer magazines and visiting the big box stores, we decided to go to a local appliance store since they are more likely to pick up the phone if something breaks. We looked at stainless steel models from Kitchen Aid, GE, Amana, LG, Whirlpool and Kenmore.
Our checklist for a "free standing" refrigerator was as follows: *Stainless Steel Design *French Doors *Bottom Freezer *Water dispenser *33" wide(we have a standard 36" wide space and like to keep a footstool on the side)
The GE Profile refrigerator line has a model that met all of our requirements, the PFSS2MJXSS Stainless Steel(22.2 cu. ft.) Bottom Freezer French Door Refrigerator. We had the local appliance store deliver it so they could connect the water line for the icemaker and water dispenser as well as level it.
Controls: The refrigerator has a "Turbo Cool" button in case you leave the doors open for a while to clean or load up items from the store and it gets warm. You push the button and it increases the speed of cooling back up with a fan so your food that has been sitting in the car on a hot day doesn't spoil. There is a simple temperature setting control that defaults to "0 degrees" for the freezer and "37 degrees" for the refrigerator compartment. You just push "cooler" or "warmer" to adjust the temperature.
Door Alarm: After two minutes the door will beep to remind you to close it.
Organization: The first thing you notice when you begin to load up the refrigerator is how nicely items can be organized. The french doors have shelves that perfectly fit for your half-gallon cartons of milk and fruit juices. This is handy when you just want to grab cream for your coffee or eggs for your famous Spanish Omelet with one hand. The water dispenser provides filtered water inside the fridge when you open the left-hand door(you replace the filter once a year-Home Depot or our friendly appliance store man has them in stock)
Shelves: The shelves are spillproof, meaning that you have edges on them to prevent spills dripping down . You can pull out and rearrange shelves to meet your storage needs.
Accessibility: You can easily get freezer items from a wheelchair or if a person has trouble reaching up. French doors are also great for families with a left-hander. Everyone gets easy access so your Southpaw Little Leager doesn't have to open a big door with his or her weaker hand. Lower bins are available for fruit storage and vegetables. The compartments have individual moisture adjustment so you can set up the whole refrigerator with items on either side.(juice boxes on the right-beer on the left)
Neat stuff:My favorite feature is the Shelf Saver Rack for beverages that you can load up with Diet Cokes. A new can rolls into place when you pull one out. One other standout feature is the top shelf that retracts the front half when you want to put a large item in like a watermelon or pot roast.
Bottom Freezer: The bottom freezer drawer is my own personal version of "Tetris" game every time we get back from the grocery store. You have a deep bottom drawer and two pull out baskets so the game is how many ways can you fit frozen items in five minutes. For my wife, the bottom drawer means she can reach everything easily.
Warranty: GE -Five years for the compressor, condenser, evaporator and all connecting tubing including labor and related service.
My only complaint, is that at the time we bought our fridge, some knucklehead at GE designed the icemaker tray so that it has a gap in the top-back side of the drawer so ice cubes fall out every time you pull the drawer out! You end up with ice cubes in the bottom and that can lead to you not being able to fully close and seal the bottom drawer.(which leads to the ice melting and frost forming inside) Thankfully, the engineers fixed the tray on the new models .
Overall, we are very happy with the GE Profile Refrigerator. The stainless steel looks great in our kitchen and is a snap to keep clean. You do have to watch out for those little fingerprints but the stainless steel cleaning wipes gets things shining in no time.
