No Disney Diva Would Be Caught Dead Having Anything But "Fairytale Flakes" For Breakfast
Written: Dec 05 '07 (Updated Dec 05 '07)
Pros:Surprisingly awesome taste, good source of calcium, princesses love it.
Cons:Possibility of being discontinued.
The Bottom Line: Fairytale Flakes: So cute you might puke.
73 days ago Annabelle and I were at the local Eckerd / Rite Aid store. It was in the process of converting from Eckerd to Rite Aid so there were a lot of things on sale. Then, in the midst of bargain hunting a squeal came from nowhere. When I turned around I saw Annabelle standing in front of an endcap of Disney Princess Fairytale Flakes. "look" [dramatic pause and an oh so cute look over her shoulder at me] "look, at the sticker" [another pause and look over her shoulder with her eyes closed and nose wrinkled up] "they're on sale". All of this was said in just above a whisper which made it even more cute than I ever thought possible. My little "discount diva"!
When coming across this type of situation I break the rules and open the package. Some store consider this shoplifting but I am paying for it so, well, whatever. If it tastes good I stock up on it. If it is nasty and horrible then I take it home and someone will eat it. It's the "not knowing" that kills me so I'd rather take a chance of getting stuck with slightly crappy food than to miss out on something awesome. The Fairytale Flakes were a lot better than I expected. And yes, for the past 73 days Annabelle has been having a bowl of these for breakfast. We are down to the last two boxes so her bowls have been getting smaller and smaller, she wants to stretch this out as much as possible and I don't blame her!
Disney's Princess Fairytale Flakes
The taste is comparable to a really thick Frosted Corn Flake but it isn't until you look at them up close that you see a light pink coloring to them. Yes, that's right, a light pink sugar glaze. I really want to say that this is a strawberry flavor but it's hard to prove since it isnt listed in the ingredients. Red 40 and corn starch but strawberry isn't. The flakes stay really crunchy in milk and even if it sits for about ten or fifteen minutes, it is still crunchy. Annabelle used to snack on this when we had ten boxes but now that she is down to the final few she is getting a little stingy with them. Oh, she will share but she will give you a bowl that is the size of a tea cup and drown it in milk.
Made by General Mills, this is one of the many cereals that has the Whole Grain seal on the box front. One cup of Fairytale Flakes contains 120 calories, 28 grams of carbohydrates [9 from sugar] and 2 grams of protein. That's without milk, if you are keeping track of calories or carbs, remember to add that to the total. This tastes great out of the box or with milk; Annabelle likes to add strawberries to it but wont eat it until the milk turns pink. With some other flake type cereal that can spell disaster as they do tend to get soggy but the Fairytale Flake stay crunchy. I have no idea what the regular selling price is on this because no other stores in the area have it in stock. I got these at Eckerd / Rite Aid for $1.24 a box. Talk about a cereal steal!
The expiration date is marked on the top of the box as well as a ten cent BoxTops For Education coupon. You can earn more about the program by visiting the website as well as www.generalmills.com. This cereal is a great way to sneak in some whole grains and vitamins into your child's diet; they wont know that it's good for them unless you tell them! Naturally, this is a 100% girlie kind of thing; even if you take it out of the box, as soon as a boy sees the light pink glaze, they will probably refuse to eat it.
The Bottom Line
This isn't the most nutritious cereal on the market but I am happy that the sugar is on the low side compared to other frosted flake varieties. I really hope that this isn't discontinued because Annabelle will be extremely disappointed. I went back to the store to get more but they were sold out of it. There were only a few boxes left at the time [after I grabbed a ton of course] and I honestly thought that she would go through a box or two and get tried of them but she hasn't.
As always, thanks for the visit
