Getting old, well older, sucks. I remember the days in my teens and twenties where I could eat whatever I wanted and not fret about how it'll affect my, uh, regularness. I miss those days - a lot, because that's just not the case anymore. I know I will pay for it later if I don't drink enough water or eat enough fiber and what an annoying thing to have to think about when I'd just like to go out with friends and family and eat what I want. It's bad enough trying to stuff enough exercise and other things that are good for me in my schedule.
But, I've found a way to get pretty close to the daily recommended amount of fiber before stepping out of the house for the day and it's not getting caught buying Costco-sized prune tubs. It is by eating a bowl of Fiber One Honey Clusters cereal for breakfast. The box claims to have 51% of daily recommended fiber amount per serving, or 13 grams, 3 grams of soluble fiber. I was reluctant to put confidence in this cereal because of a scathing review I read of the Fiber One Cereal bars basically stating that mixing sugar and other additives in a dry snack bar voids out the fiber benefits. But, not the case with the cereal having the opportunity to eat with plenty of milk and water. The thought of stuffing a dry cereal bar, as I often see people do while driving, is just not appealing to me anyway. Breakfast is my news-watching morning Zen time before commuting to the workplace chaos. Anyway, a serving size is 1 cup and a 14.25 oz box has 8 servings, though I tend to get more like 10-11 servings out of it.
The ingredients list is long, starting with whole grain wheat, corn bran and wheat bran. Nothing too funky except trisodium phosphate, which, according to Wikipedia, is a cleaning agent used to prepare painting surfaces and commonly found in hardware stores. Also a food additive that works as a laxative and typically included in over-the-counter enema kits. Hmmm. Also in the list is tripotassium phosphate, a food additive to enhance nutrients. It has 160 calories per serving, 200 with a half cup of skim milk.
Needless to say, including this cereal in my daily routine has alleviated any fretting about keeping things moving. But, it also tastes great, sweet, but not too sweet, and crunchy and not like cardboard that's been through the paper shredder. It's good with milk or mixed with yogurt. The texture of the flakes hold up well in milk, preserving the crunch for quite a bit while not being grainy. Wouldn't mind seeing more clusters, but I suppose that would increase the calories per serving. I like it with a sliced banana or blueberries as well and find it holds me well to lunch, unlike co-workers diving into candy bowls and desk snacks to tide them over.
