...Not Catherine Zeta Jones. T-Mobile.
I live in the Danville, California area.
I have gone through a number of cell providers, from GTE (which became Verizon) to ATT Wireless (which became Cingular). Verizon was ok service but very expensive. Cingular was horrible service (huge, gaping black holes without service in my area and in my office in San Francisco, I would sit in a high rise and watch the bars fluctuate from three to zero) and outrageously expensive.
I take blame for part of the Cingular problem, as I had signed up for a service level that quickly became insufficient. I was up to a $250+ a month bill and Cingular didn't really offer up much that would help me. So when my two years under the service contract ran, I did too.
I had heard very bad things about T-Mobile in the San Francisco Bay Area, but I also have T-Mobile on my work Blackberry and I noticed it had good reception wherever I went. So with that and an amazing offer of 1500 minutes for $39.95, and only a one year contract required with a free new Motorola phone (an excellent V330, which I've had nothing but praise for), I decided to take the chance.
First, the coverage maps that T-Mobile put on their website are very helpful and they also are very conservative. That's a good thing, as where they show marginal coverage I actually get good coverage.
Second, except for a few places that I don't get a very good signal (Daly City, for one), the coverage overall is outstanding. From the Danville/San Ramon/Pleasanton/Dublin area all the way into San Francisco along the BART line or via 680 or 580, the signal is strong and uninterrupted for about 99.5% of the route.
Third, and this is the most amazing part, the bill I get each month is a total of $49 or so. That's with tax and all the fees. Considering that I was paying Cingular over $200 a month for far less time and worse coverage, this is an outstanding bargain. Add in the superior coverage and it's the way cell service was supposed to be.
I have yet to call customer service, so I don't know what that is like, but the fact that I've not had a problem in the year or so I've had the service is more important.
1500 minutes for $39.99 was an amazing deal. I'm a VERY satisfied T-Mobile customer.
