Previously, very little research was focused on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Despite being recorded as far back as 2000 B.C., this illness is greatly misunderstood and left on the back burner with the typical prescription from family, friends and the community to "just get over it." Unfortunately they do not understand that the people who end up with PTSD are the ones who could get over it, if it were even remotely possible.
Surveys show an amazing number of similar behavior patterns in people with PTSD. These are overachievers, problem solvers who are compassionate and tolerant. These are the kind of people we want in our lives. These are the people who will neither be a victim or a perpetrator. These are people who chose the most rational path in the middle of insanity. They did not pass on the trauma the trauma on to others nor did that to the situation lying down. They look only for the rational and human way to work through a situation.
"The stress caused by trauma can affect all aspects of a person's life including mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Research suggests that prolonged trauma may disrupt and alter brain chemistry." [www.Sidran.org] In the case of post-traumatic stress (PTS), the brains fight-or-flight hormones are stuck in high gear. These 3 hormones (adrenaline, norepinephrine, dopamine) are collectively referred to as catecholamines. In an individual with PTS, these overzealous chemicals need to be tamed and decreased for the individual to have functioning. Without proper treatment, individuals with PTSD become agoraphobic, hiding inside the house rather than risk an "attack" in public or even around friends and family. As more time passes, the individual is left with a smaller and smaller support network due to others' inability to handle their "triggered" behaviors. This group also decreases because the individual pushes others away, isolating rather than allowing people to see his/her erratic behavior.
This problem is exacerbated by the current trend to prescribe antidepressants. Antidepressants are typically SSRIs, SNRIs or tricyclics. These medicines are designed to "stimulate." As individuals with PTSD are already overstimulated, this is counterintuitive. What's worse, these medicines actually increase catecholamine levels in the brain and, therefore, increase the symptoms of fight-or-flight which are already overloaded in the patient's brain.
Geodon is a particularly useful medicine for those who suffer from PTSD. It is designed to act on all three catecholamines: adrenaline, norepinephrine and dopamine. However, the strongest effects are on the latter two. To increase effectiveness rapidly, it should be supplemented with a low dose of Inderal. While not traditionally thought of as a PTSD medication, the pharmacology of Geodon, particularly when combined with Inderal, is a perfect fit for reducing PTS symptoms.
The generic name for Geodon is Ziprasidone. It is produced by Pfizer in the United States. According to the Pfizer website, Geodon has a high binding affinity for the dopamine D2 and D3, the serotonin 5HT2A, 5HT2C, 5HT1A, 5HT1D, and α1-adrenergic receptors.
Translation: Geodon is an antagonist (blocks) the reception of dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain. Blocking serotonin is useful because serotonin increases the production of norepinephrine.
Of particular note is that Geodon also has a moderate affinity for the histamine receptor. Histamine in the body creates a release of adrenaline as a response to shut down the histamine reaction. (This is why patients experiencing extreme allergic reactions are given adrenaline to stop the reaction.) By blocking histamine receptors, the need for adrenaline in the body is naturally decreased and so are the symptoms of anxiety. (Vistaril is one antihistamine often prescribed to decrease anxiety by reducing histamine and, therefore, adrenaline.)
By combining Geodon with low doses (20-40mg a day) of Inderal (generic: propranolol) patients experience an immediate and dramatic decrease in post-traumatic stress symptoms. Inderal acts on β1- and β2-adrenergic receptors, In other words, it blocks adrenaline specifically.
So, 20 mg Geodon combined with 20 mg Inderal will drastically decrease catecholamines by blocking adrenaline, norepinephrine and dopamine receptors as well as acting on serotonin and histamine. If you have a friend or know someone who is suffering from PTSD, please provide this information to them so they can discuss it with their physicians. There is no reason for you or a loved one to suffer while the medical community fumbles about with random research and leaves you desperate while waiting for the lastest information to circulate.
A gift from me to victims of childhood sexual abuse, other forms of abuse, any other traumatic experience and our soldiers who go out to war only to come home and fight, until now, what has been an unwinnable war. Let's win the most important war, the one inside our heads, by using these medicines to turn those lives around.
