New studies show that Inderal (generic Propranolol) has a significant impact on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Recent research shows that prolonged exposure to trauma can disrupt and alter brain chemistry. In the case of PTSD, the bodys natural fight-or-flight response appears to get stuck in ones system. A healthy and useful adaptation, when confronted with a dangerous situation, the body releases adrenaline, noradrenaline and dopamine in order to prepare the body to more efficiently fight the threat or flee from danger. Each chemical has a different effect on the body.
In the case of adrenaline, the body is stimulated in a way that allows a person to prepare a more efficient external or active response. Adrenaline increases a persons heart rate, sweating and muscle movement. This would allow a person to run or attack with greater success. As we see with exercise, an increase of heart rate allows for faster movement. Sweating keeps the body cool, allowing for longer exertion. Twitching or trembling warms the muscles and prevents cramping. By releasing adrenaline, the fight-or-flight response gives us an advantage in threatening situations. The problem is that, today, most situations require a more subtle response than physical attack or running away. In the majority of threatening situations, we must repress the response and think or way out of danger. The failure to respond to this ancient urge may actually explain how and why the fight-or-flight response gets stuck. Certainly, that would readily explain why the adrenaline, noradrenaline and dopamine continue to flood into the body long after the threat has passed.
Together, these three chemicals allow us to deal more effectively with crisis. Yet when they continue to flow long after the danger has passed, they end up interfering with daily life and creating additional trauma that would not exist otherwise. Controlling the effects of adrenaline is key to counteracting the negative byproduct of this problem post-traumatic stress.

Inderal is a blood pressure medication that is a beta-blocker. What this means is that the medicine blocks the reception of adrenaline in the body. The receptors for adrenaline are grouped as "beta" adrenergic receptors (as opposed to the receptors for noradrenaline, which are the alpha receptors). Adrenaline is associated with chills, heart palpitations and panic that occur with PTSD. It is also a major factor in feeling on guard. The hyper arousal associated with PTSD leads to irritability, sudden anger, difficulty sleeping, lack of concentration, being overly alert and being easily startled. Inderal reduces all these symptoms and, better still, has been shown to reduce the flashbacks, nightmares and dissociation related to PTSD.
By taking 10-20 mg of Inderal, the effects of adrenaline can be blocked and users can regain control of the chemicals in their body, instead of letting the chemicals control them.
Due to the low dose, side effects are generally rare in patients using the drug to treat PTSD. The most common side effect is lower blood pressure. Because Inderal is a medication used to assist patients with high blood pressure, it will also affect blood pressure in individuals who are using it to treat PTSD. Be certain to know your average blood pressure range before beginning treatment with Inderal. In addition, make certain to ask what your blood pressure is whenever you visit your doctor. Signs of low blood pressure include dizziness, weakness and fatigue.
