Jesus he knows me; I can't dance, dance on a Volcano. Misunderstanding? Hold on my heart, follow you, follow me! No son of mine throwing it all away. Land of confusion that's all no reply at all. Tonight, tonight tonight turn it on again your own special way, invisible touch. The lamb lies down on Broadway. Afterglow.
You may recognize this from the Book of Genesis.
In the beginning God created light dark, the earth and some time later Fender guitars and Roland Synthesizers. In the 70s through the early 90s, Genesis created Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, Wind & Wuthering, Trick of the Tail, Abacab, Duke, Genesis, We Can't Dance and Invisible Touch (and many other fine albums).
Genesis Guitar Anthology contains the recorded guitar music and tab for all 18 of the songs in the opening paragragh. Read it closely, the opening paragraph contains 17 of them, and of course the song ABACAB is in the title. The songs range from early Peter Gabriel masterpieces like Lamb Lies Down on Broadway to the commercial pop hits of later Phil Collins led Genesis such as Tonight, Tonight, Tonight. Although I've never thought of Genesis strictly in terms of the guitar parts, Mike Rutherford's guitar parts drive the melodies of the songs as much as Banks keyboards or Collins vocals. Of course the early Genesis albums had Steve Hackett on guitar driving Gabriels complex melodies forth. I'm not saying this book will make you sound like either of these guitarists, but the music and tab for the guitar parts is laid out for this hodge podge selection of 18 songs.
Song Layout
Each song contains a bar for music and a bar for Tab. There are also separate lines for each guitar, since Genesis uses complex arrangments for their sound. The title of each song is at the beginning, together with the album that it appeared in, and who wrote the words and music. Below the title is a fingering layout for the chords that will be used in the song. Instructions for amplifier settings are also set out. For example in the song Follow You, Follow Me states w/flanger & stereo delay set delay for eighth note regeneration w/ 1 repeat. It also notes that guitar one is clean and that guitar 2 is actually the keyboard parts arranged for guitar.
The chords to be played are above the music notation, and the Tablature is below that. The lyrics are also printed out for each song.
TAB
The Hal Leonard Recorded Versions Guitar all use the basic form of TAB notation. Lines represent the 6 strings of the guitar, and the numbers on the string indicate where your fat fingers go on the fret board. (0 being an open string, 1 first fret 2 second fret.. all the way to 22 for the 22nd fret). All the variety of guitar tricks are explained in both the TAB and music notation. Bends, bend and release, pre bend, vibrato, hammer ons, pull offs, shift and legato slides, palm muting, raking and harmonics are all indicated to get the sounds just the way they are played. If you've listened to music long enough, you know there is a definite different sound to a note being picked to a note being hammered on. Slides sound different than pull offs and hammer ons. A bend is different sounding than the vibrato bar. All these subtle nuances are covered.
TAB Example
From the first song that I heard that introduced me to the albums of Genesis - Abacab from Abacab.
E___________________________________________
B___________________________________________
G________7___________5 >1/4_____________5___
D_____________5--7___________7______________
A___5____________________________5 \ 3 ______
E___________________________________________
--- indicates hammer on
>1/4 indicates quarter note bend and
\ indicates slide
(actual tab looks different, but my keyboard won't reproduce it)
The above is the beginning of the opening guitar solo of ABACAB. It looks simple enough, but I played it (with the next three measures) for over two hours last night. The song is played moderately fast.

How to Use
For you it may be different, but I typically use TAB books together with the original song. I first play out the song bits at a time, then I listen to the song. I listened to the opening solo of ABACAB a couple dozen times, each time playing the above indicated notes until I got the timing down right. Then I tackle the next part of the song, in the case of ABACAB it is where the fuzzy synthesized guitar power chords come in. It is hard to separate the synthesizers from the guitars in many Genesis recordings because of the effects used. Nevertheless, this book gives both the guitar parts and the keyboard parts arranged for guitar. (I suppose you could also use the musical notation to simply play the keyboard parts on a keyboard).
Testing
This book was tested using a Fender 60th Annivesary Telecaster with a Peavey Vypyr 30 Modeling Amplifier. Genesis songs were played back using iTunes. Thus far, the tablature seems to be pretty accurate.
Price / Value
The book is 19.95, over a dollar a song. It is an odd selection of songs for certain, but yet, the book manages to pick some great songs from the progressive seventies roots to the mid eighties pop sound of the band. Your value from this book will depend on how many of the songs you like from the selection. Between my son and I, we liked quite a wide assortment, so it was a good value. I love early Genesis, however my son really enjoys the more pop tunes on We Can't Dance and Invisible Touch. We both love Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.
Summary
Jesus He knows me, but when I had a Misunderstanding in the Land of Confusion, I got No Reply at All. I Can't Dance, but I wanted the Invisible Touch so that Tonight, tonight, tonight, I could Turn it on Again. My son wanted to learn Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. No son of Mine would be without this book. I told him Hold on my Heart and play Your own Special Way. Follow you, Follow me with the tab in this Genesis Guitar Anthology book by Hal Leonard. After learning Abacab, I felt like I could Dance on a Volcano. Don't be Throwing it all away, bask in the Afterglow of learning these Genesis songs. That's All
