Let me describe it objectively first: Throatsinging, which is an umbrella term for a variety of folk singing styles practiced in an around the area of Tuva, a mountain community bordered by China, Mongolia and Russia. The closest thing I've heard in America is that voice-box guitar all over that freakin' Peter Frampton live album. An hour of this makes German accordion music accompanied with Scottish bagpipes sound inviting.

The documentary itself first concerns the efforts of a group of Americans including physicist Richard Feynman to secure Tuva a place in the 1990 Rose Bowl (their reason: the capital of the country sounded cool). They also had been tuned in to that country's brand of music vis a vis Soviet radio.

Another of the group is a blind guitar player who's learned throatsinging vis a vis the same shortwave pick up. He's learned the tricks of the styles and eventually gets invited to Tuva's once-every-three years throatsinging contest festival. Complications involving a possibly cursed drum and missing medication ensue.

The guitar player develops an acute attachment to his new country and a great sense of loss when he has to leave. The documentary contains a few humorous moments and some okay images (flying birds, hence the title), but not nearly enough to offset the acute musical damage incurred.
