Are you female? Do you have high blood cholesterol? Do you get most of your protein from animal sources? Are you a vegetarian? Are you concerned about osteoporosis, cancer, menopause discomforts, PMS? Are you an elder?
If you answer yes to any one of these questions, consider including soy protein in your daily diet.
Thanks to GeniSoy Soy Protein products, this is an easy and palatable thing to do. I prefer the GeniSoy shake powders because of their versatility: Not only do they taste great mixed with low-fat milk or fruit juice, but you can add them to everyday recipes for an extra boost of good protein.
Why Soy Protein?
Soybeans contain chemicals called isoflavones. These chemicals, found almost exclusively in soybeans, have great antioxidant properties and have been proven to lower "bad" cholesterol levels, prevent osteoporosis, and ease menopausal symptoms. Soy protein can also balance estrogen levels, help cleanse the colon and reduce the bloating often associated with PMS.
If you're an American, you probably already consume a lot of protein from animal sources. With your meat, you probably also consume a lot of fat, and diets that include too much meat have been shown to increase the risks of heart disease, some cancers and osteoporosis. You might think that meat is the best source of protein, but did you know that soy protein is actually richer in the amino acids necessary to build muscle tissue?
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommends that we adopt diets richer in vegetable proteins and lower in saturated fats. The USDA recommends a protein intake of about 50 grams for adults on a 2000-calorie diet. Of that 50 grams, approximately half should come from vegetable sources, such as soybeans. A one-scoop serving of vanilla or chocolate GeniSoy powder provides 14 grams of protein. The plain variety provides a full 25 grams of protein per scoop.
Why GeniSoy Soy Protein?
In making its protein powders, GeniSoy uses water rather than alcohol to remove sugars and other compounds from the raw soybeans. This is important because it maximizes the concentration of isoflavones and other beneficial compounds, which are soluble in alcohol -- and therefore lost in alcohol extraction.
Unlike some other protein powders I've tried, GeniSoy isn't too grainy and blends easily with cold liquids. I don't own a blender -- considered essential by many who use powders for shakes -- and I don't really need one. I use a wire whisk and a mixing bowl to prepare my shakes. To me, this is simpler, quicker and easier to clean up than a blender, and it works well.
Plain or Flavored?
GeniSoy has no strong aftertaste, unlike many other powders. I have used all three varieties: plain, chocolate and vanilla.
I find I particularly like the vanilla flavor, although it tastes more like lemon than vanilla to me. I use the vanilla in shakes made with milk or juice, and I particularly like mixing it with cranberry juice. If you do own a blender, you can make a great fruit smoothie using almost any fruit. (My favorites are bananas, berries, mangoes and peaches.)
The plain GeniSoy powder is best for adding to regular recipes, such as pancakes, muffins and french toast. If you really want to be creative, the GeniSoy website (http://www.genisoy.com) has an extensive collection of recipes, from breakfast to soups and sauces to main entrees, all using the soy powder. I provide respite care for elders, and these recipes are a good way to help those who need to consume more protein but don't like the idea or taste of protein shakes.
I don't really enjoy cooking in a hurry, and I used to skip breakfast. Now I use GeniSoy shakes as a healthy start for myself. When I drink a shake for breakfast, I feel energized and ready to take on the day, and I seldom get hungry before lunchtime. I also find that my premenstrual sugar and chocolate cravings go away.
GeniSoy also makes protein bars, which are handy in a pinch, but I definitely prefer the shakes.
