Id sampled various flavors from the GeniSoy soy protein bars and considered them a good value with average to above average taste. I almost walked right past the small display for the GeniSoy Xtreme bars thinking that they were a new product from Gatorade [silver and orange packaging]. I saw the red clearance stickers on the candy shelf at the check out and started to look for my favorite breath mints [X Factor] when I saw the same silver and orange packages only this time I looked a little closer and saw that they were the Xtreme bars. Not being one to pass up a bargain I picked up a few of them and tossed them in the cart. Had I known that they tasted this great, I would have grabbed them all off the shelf. These started out with a retail price of .79 cents then dropped to .67 cents then to .55 cents how could I pass up that deal? Checking the expiration date on the front of the bar I saw that these were best by October 8, 2003 so they certainly werent close to going bar or losing any flavor.
The Nitty Gritty
First off, if you are doing any type of low carbohydrate type diet, these might be something that you will want to avoid or at the very least use sparingly. On average these contain about 23 24 grams of carbs per serving [1.6 ounce bar] so that could easily break your diet but if you are having a bad craving you can cut it into quarters and snack on the pieces over the course of a few days. Packed with 19 vitamins and minerals, the GeniSoy Xtreme Peanut Butter Fix is my favorite so from here on out, all the information in regards to nutrition will be about that bar. Made with soy protein [something that Im usually not too fond of] the bar is good for between meals or when you dont want to do the fast food route but its important to know exactly what you are consuming, especially if you are trying to lose weight. Depending on the type of diet that you are on, this could be a blessing in disguise or the downfall of your meal structure. Be sure to read the label before you dive into it because these things taste so good that if you are extremely hungry you can kill off a few of these without thinking twice about it.
You can expect this bar to hold you over for about an hour before any hunger pain start to come creeping back up on you but I dont suggest that you grab another bar instead have a small meal or at the very least a chicken breast and green vegetables. These bars shouldnt be used as meal replacements even though they are packed with vitamins and minerals there just isnt enough to sustain you and keep you going. Since each of the bars has slight variation in regards to the actual vitamin and mineral levels, I suggest that you check out the website where they have individual listings of each of the bars in the Xtreme series. The Peanut Butter Fix has the following levels: [please note, these are the percentages based on a 2,000 calorie a day diet / food intake plan] Vitamins A, B6, C, D2, E and B12 25 %, Copper, Zinc, Riboflavin, Niacin and Thiamin 25 %, Calcium, Magnesium and Phosphorus 20%.
There is a warning on the package that this product is manufactured in the same environment with products that contain peanuts, egg products, nut meat, soy and milk so if you are allergic to any of these items you should use caution when consuming these bars. There could be trace elements of these food additives in the bars and in my opinion I think that its great that they include this information for those that have allergies.
The Taste
What good is a nutrition bar if it tastes like you are eating dirt or sand? Thankfully these bars are great tasting and satisfy your craving especially when chocolate is what you want. The Peanut Butter Fix tastes the best, but thats just my opinion. Since this has tiny little soy nuggets in it there is a nice crunch to it but it isnt so hard that it becomes a chore to chew it. This one is coated with a thin layer of chocolate so you get the best of both worlds chocolate and peanut butter flavor. There isnt much of an after taste to the peanut butter flavor and so far the boys havent complained about the other flavors that Ive picked up and in my opinion if a kid will eat a supplement bar rather than a candy bar then it usually has a great taste.
Flavors
The GeniSoy Xtreme is currently available in four flavors: Peanut Butter Fix, Raspberry Rush, Carrot Cake Quake and Rocky Roadtrip. All the bars are the same size 1.6 ounces or 45 grams. To view the bars as well as the individual nutritional values, please visit the Genisoy website [address listed below]. Since the only flavor that really appealed to me was the peanut butter one I havent worked up the nerve to try the berry or carrot cake ones but I did take a bite of my sons Rocky Roadtrip and it tasted almost identical to the Promax Rocky Road bar.
The Bottom Line
These are better than grabbing a standard candy bar and if you have an uncontrollable hunger and nothing else seems to do the trick these are a great option. Since I try to maintain a low carbohydrate diet in three week cycles, these are only an option when I am having a cheat day or need something chocolaty. My boys seem to like all the flavors and they can be a bit critical at times when it comes to the overall taste of sport supplement bars. If you are trying to eat smart, lose a few pounds or just stay away from sweets, I highly recommend trying out any of the four flavors of the GeniSoy Xtreme bars.
