If for some reason you could only own one George Carlin stand up DVD...Jammin' in New York would be the one to own.
"It's like 'pre-recorded.' 'This program was pre-recorded.' Well, of course is was pre-recorded. When else are you going to record it, afterwards? That's the whole principle of recording, to do it beforehand. Otherwise, it doesn't really work, does it?"
Actually this was the 8th comedy special Carlin did for HBO (in 1992) and it was broadcast live as he performed (for the first time ever).
Everything clicks here. The rants and rage against duplicity and stupidy not only connect like a perfect down the middle pitch you can't help but hit a home run with, but they are also witty, memorable and funny too.
He roasts politicians, the mis-use of our language, the rich, bleeding heart liberals, conservatives, golf and more. There's not a dull moment in this 57 minute filmed stand up routine from the early 90s. He rants, he wittily skewers several sacred cows and he's hysterically funny.
His opening number Rockets and Penises in the Persian Gulf was referring to first Gulf War and to the first George Bush but it almost also applies to the current situation and Bush Jr. too.
Airline Announcements is one of his longest bits and his love of words and hatred for artificial words comes through on this still fresh and laugh till it hurts routine.
The best bit on Golf he's ever done Golf Courses for the Homeless is part of this show.
Some of the most vicious and funnies attacks on society he's ever made are part of THE PLANET IS FINE (THE PEOLE ARE SCREWED) routine.
And there's more.
One thing however. The DVD box say the running time is 83 minutes... LIE... LIE... LIE....or as George might say BULLSH*ttt!!!! it's 57 minutes... but you would be hard pressed to find a sharper, funnier, take no prisoner 57 minutes of comment and comedy anywhere. No appologies, no sweetness, just ornery George at his
cantankerous, observational best.
If you enjoy Carlin at all-- Own it.
