| wolfec2's Full Review: Gerber Diaper Bags Basics 5 In 1 Diaper Gift Bag S... |
We purchased the Gerber Diaper Bags Basics 5 in 1 Diaper Gift Bag Set when our first diaper bag wore out when our son was only 2 months old. I guess I tried to pack too many things in it and it just couldn't handle it. This bag can handle everything that I try and squeeze into it and more.
We found this bag at Wal-Mart about 16 months ago after looking at three other stores (2 baby specialty stores and one other discount store). After seeing all the extra pockets and organizational features, I knew this bag was for me. Seeing the neutral navy blue and dark green colors (different from picture and I prefer the green to the red so I am glad we have the green), I knew my husband wouldn't be ashamed of carrying this bag either. This has turned out to be a good thing because I pack so many things in it that I usually have him carry it because it is so heavy.
Description:
The bag itself is a little over 2 feet long by about 1 foot high and about 8 inches deep. These are estimates because it all depends on how much you stuff you pack into the bag. The bag doesn't fit in the basket of my double stroller when fully packed. The bag has an adjustable shoulder strap and two carrying handles that velcro together if desired.
The main compartment is opened with a double zipper so I can usually find the zipper in the middle of the top. I can fit a ton of stuff into this part including the baby (I tried an old baby doll of mine that is actually bigger than my daughter and that fit).
This compartment easily holds:
* 10 diapers
* Attached zipper pouch
* 2 full changes of clothes (one each for my toddler son and infant daughter)
* Wipes
* Several toys for toddler and infant
* Assorted inflatable toys for toddler
* Book for mom
* Wallet and checkbook
* Large container of Cheerios
* Plastic bags for garbage
* Changing pad
The secondary compartment is on the outside of the bag and also opens with a double zipper. This compartment is great for carrying baby food and a lot of other things. The flap of this compartment is one big clear zippered bag. I use this section for napkins, spoons, crackers, wipes, etc. The other side of this compartment has 3 plastic loops that hold items secure to the inside wall. I use these loops to hold baby food jars, crackers, and small bottles. The inside wall also has a small pocket for little items like more crackers (my son loves crackers), wipes, or toys.
The outside of the bag has 2 bottle pockets that hold 2 regular bottles each or one disposable size bottle each. These bottle pockets also hold Mommy's keys, money, and sipy cups so I can grab them quickly.
The other parts of the Gift Bag Set:
Changing pad - This pad folds up to fit inside the main part of the bag. I have used this many times for changing my kids when the changing area didn't look too clean. So far, this has not cracked like my other changing pad. The changing pad could be a bit bigger to hold a squirmy toddler.
Attachable zipper pouch - This pouch has the words "Dirty Duds" on it but I don't use it for dirty clothes (that's what disposable baggies are for). I put all kinds of small junk into it to prevent the junk from rolling around the big bag. I keep lotions, no-water hand sanitizer, change, Tums, children's Motrin, Band-Aids, etc. for the little emergencies that always seem to crop up. This pouch attaches to the inside of the main compartment with a hook and string. It is always easy to find and never lost. It can be detached if needed.
Mini diaper bag - This is a small (lunch bag size) mini diaper bag with an adjustable strap. I usually keep this in the car packed with 4 diapers, a travel-size wipe, and a couple of small toys. The bag has a flap that folds over the top and closes with velco. This bag is perfect for the quick trip or when the kids get a bit older and don't need much.
Bottle bag - This is an insulated draw-string bag that is shaped to hold a bottle. It can be attached to the bag using the strap and snaps. This also fits into a side bottle pocket.
The bag, bottle bag, and mini bag are all made of canvas that never seems to get dirty but is washable. I have spilled drinks and food on the bag and have always been able to clean it with a wet cloth. There has been no fading or wear. The bags all look brand new.
What I like about this set:
Neutral colors that can be carried by men or women.
Doesn't look like a typical diaper bag.
The bottle bag and mini bag are nice extras.
More than enough room for everything.
Great for multiple kids needing diaper stuff at the same time.
Looks brand new after 16 months of use.
What I don't like about this set:
Velcro tube to hold handle together prevents getting into the main compartment.
Changing pad could be bigger.
Doesn't fit in the basket of my double stroller.
I recommend this bag set to all my friends and anyone looking for a roomy diaper bag. This is not for people who like little things or if they don't want to carry a lot of stuff.
