mommykd's Full Review: Gerber Finger Foods Fruit Puffs
I made the mistake of letting my 8 month old son try to spoon feed himself a few weeks ago - just for fun. Not only did we create a huge mess, but now we have a baby that wants to feed himself all the time. Obviously he is not ready for spoon feeding himself yet, and I didn't expect him to be, but in order to keep us both happy, I have been forced to come up with a variety of things that he can feed himself. Something besides Cheerios. In the baby food aisle at Wal Mart I found Gerber Finger Foods - Fruit Puffs (Banana). The container is 1.48 ounces and is safety sealed and wrapped with a re-sealable blue plastic lid. They are also available in Strawberry-Apple, and Veggie Puffs Sweet Potato. The label says for babies learning to self feed, so into the cart they went.
More information from the label
Puffed grains with real bananas. Melts in baby's mouth. Perfect first finger food. Unique, fun shape that's just right for babies to pick up. Made with real bananas. Light and airy texture dissolves easily. Portable package great for at home and on the go. Good source of iron and zinc. Your baby is ready for fruit puffs when he can crawl on hands and knees, eat thicker, lumpier foods, use jaws to mash food with gums, and hold small foods between thumb and first finger.
Ingredients:
Rice flour, oat flour, wheat flour, wheat starch, sugar, bananas, natural flavor, tri and diacalcium phosphate, tocopherols (Vitamin E), soy lecithin, soybean oil, zinc sulfate, electrolytic iron, caramel color and turmeric color.
Snack Time
The perfect test for the Fruit Puffs came when we got home. What to do with a hungry, fussy baby while I put away the groceries? I put him in his high chair and opened the container of Fruit Puffs. These are small star shaped snacks, a little bit larger than a cheerio. I didn't have to hand him his first one, he immediately picked it up and placed it in his mouth. Now, it did not melt in his mouth as the label suggests, but it did soften and appeared easy for him to gum until he could swallow it. I scattered several on the tray of his highchair and happily went about putting away the rest of the groceries - paying close attention to keep an eye on him to ensure he had no choking problems. The only problem was keeping Fruit Puffs on his tray. He ate them faster than I could put away one bagful of groceries.
Overall:
I think that Gerber Finger Foods Fruit Puffs are a nice first finger food for babies learning to feed themselves, and a change of pace from the "normal" first finger foods. However, since it takes about 80 pieces to make a serving which only has 25 calories, I'd consider this more of a snack and certainly not a substitute for a meal. My 3 1/2 year old daughter also likes to snack on these. I tried one myself, even though I do not like bananas. It didn't melt in my mouth either, but did dissolve quickly, and tasted like a banana flavored Cheerio. I'll leave these for the kids!
