| cntaur5's Full Review: Gerber Gas Relief Drops 1oz |
Do you remember the old Alka Seltzer jingle, "Flop, flop, fizz, fizz. Oh, what a relief it is"? This jingle was before my son's time, but gas bubbles in the stomach and the intestines has been around for ages.
By the middle of this month, our son will weigh about twice what he weighed at birth as he hits the 5-month mark. Along with gaining weight, our baby has started on solids enjoying new foods. Although my wife feeds our son with ease, whenever I feed him it seems like he insist on playing between bites and eventually develops gas pain. No matter how long I burp him, he spits up and squirms in my arms.
When he experiences gas pain I want him to be relieved as safely and as quickly as possible. I purchased Gerber Gas Relief Drops from our local Walgreen's Pharmacy to help our son battle gas. The tiny 1 FL OZ. (30 mL) bottle cost a whopping $10.00. After getting past the initial sticker shock I opened the box of Gerber's Simethicone/Anti-Gas, which comes with a plastic oral dropper that's enclosed in the box. Although I did not taste it, the label reads that it has a natural apple and banana flavor. I was a bit apprehensive because he likes bananas but has not been crazy about applesauce. The last thing I want to do is give him something that he does not like when he is dealing with gas.
After reading the directions and putting the calibrated dropper in the bottle I began shaking it vigorously. I then measured out 0.3 mL according to the directions on the back of the bottle since he is less than 24 lbs. Fortunately our baby gave his stamp of approval on the taste as he swallowed the 0.3 mL. I gave it to our son straight not mixing with water, or infant formula. Eureka! He did not regurgitate it as it passed through his system. Thank goodness he takes it like a champ!
Now that it's down the hatch, I observed him to see if it worked. Auspiciously, like clock work, his symptoms dissipated within a matter of minutes. I only had to use one dosage after his meal. Gerber Gas Relief Drops has a sweet aroma and does not give him bad breath. It is alcohol-free and is colorless. I did not spill any when I used it, according to the label it won't stain clothing. We currently follow the directions on the label and store it at room temperature.
The ingredients as noted on the label are below:
Each 0.3 mL contains 20mg Simethicone, Carbomer 934, Citric Acid D&C Red #33, Hydroxypropyl, Methylcellulose, Purified Water, Saccharin Calcium, Sodium Benzoate, Sodium Citrate, and Vanillin. My son has not had any drug interactions with simethicone or any of the other ingredients. If any of the ingredients I've listed cause concern, my recommendation is that you contact your physician or pharmacist.
One of the many things I like about the product is the calibrated dropper and the easy to follow directions. Overall, it's easy for me to use and administer. It appears my son likes or tolerates the taste and the drops appear to work within minutes eliminating his gas pain. Bottom Line Gerber Gas Relief Drops is a good anti-gas medicine for our son breaking down his gas bubbles and relieving his symptoms.
The only minor draw back I had was reading the print on the bottle, the writing is small and I had to hold the bottle close to my face. Fortunately at this point administering Gerber Gas Relief Drops is as easy as 1, 2, and 3. I have used this product for approximately two weeks and we are currently satisfied with the results. We have also used Mylicon in the past a comparable product providing the same gas-relieving outcome.
As with all medicine it's recommended that you keep this out of reach of the children. Although the bottle has one of those push down and twist child proof caps one never can be to careful. Its also recommended by the manufacturer that you not exceed 12 doses per day, except under the advice and supervision of a doctor and of course if condition persists, consult your doctor immediately. Its also important for parents to remember results may vary depending upon your child. Research suggests that gas is very common in babies, and can be caused by a variety of reasons.
