| ahaight's Full Review: Gerber LST Knife |
Two of the things that bug me about pocket knives are their weight, and the fact that you have this long, fat thing in your pocket. It just feels weird.
Gerber's LST series knives are surprisingly light -- I was quite amazed when I first got one. The Mini LST (the baby brother to this knife), which is about 1-1/2" long when closed, is like a feather in your hand, barely there at all.
In spite of it, these knives are of extremely high quality in all respects. The mechanism is smooth and sturdy, with no give in the joint. It's easy to open, requiring minimal force to extend the blade. Although this knife does not have a nail groove or a thumbstud, it doesn't require one. I can open it with one hand (takes some dexterity). The blade locks in place decisively when in the open position, and is easy to disengage with minimal force for closure.
The LST is not designed for heavy duty use such as camping or other outdoor activity. It lacks the kind of handle needed for safe gripping during high-force cutting and sawing, and would not be comfortable for prolonged use due to the thinness of the handle.
The blade is razor sharp and I have not yet needed to sharpen mine over 2 years later. I use it mainly for opening boxes at work, cutting threads off my clothes, sometimes trimming my cuticles, or anything else that requires a fairly sharp blade but isn't heavy duty work.
The handle is made of a composite material that most closely resembles a dense, high-impact plastic. It doesn't feel cheap at all, and definitely provides a better grip than simple plastic would. The finish is very slightly textured for easier handling.
This is a good knife for women, since its thin profile and light weight makes carrying it easy, even in a pocket. Also, it doesn't require breaking off a fingernail or making a dent in the flesh of your finger to open and close it.
