I had not planned on giving my newborn a pacifier as I was nursing and did't want to go throught the whole nipple confusion thing. Plus, I did not want to have to go through the trauma (mine - ha!ha!:)) of breaking him of it.
While still in the hospital during our first night, my little fellow decided he wanted to cry or suck! Well, I was sore,so the nurse decided that it should be the sucking! She bought us a Gerber Nuk pacifier and popped it in that little mouth and he was as quite as a mouse for at least an hour!
I received a few pacifiers at my shower, so I did not buy one of these other than what the hospital had given me. When it came to wash his one and only NUK, I gave him one of the other brands. He promptly spit it out. Tried another brand, again, he spit it out.
I quickly washed it and gave it right back. He was satisfied and cried no more.
The next week, I received a great little package from BC/BS from their new baby program and was thrilled to see inside, a new Gerber NUK!
Needless to say, I have stocked up on these great little baby pleasers.
The Gerber NUK is mouth shaped, with a dip in the top of the pacifier. It looks to be made of a nipple piece, a mouth shield with two small holes on either side, a small piece holding the nipple in the shield and a ring with nubs around it.
There are different sizes and shaped nipple so you can get the one that is right for your baby. Mine prefers the one with the rounded top and flat underside. I think this is called the orthodontic one.
The only thing I don't like is that yucky gunk seems to collect around the base of the nipple. I have been washing ours regularly in the dishwasher and they have held up quite well. I give him a newly cleaned one daily and alternate them, so they have been washed quite a few times.
I highly recommend these pacifiers if you have a picky baby like mine.
