| Dr_Steph's Full Review: Gerber Nuk Classic Pacifier |
I must admit I've chuckled a bit when reading all the impassioned testimonials about which pacifier is the BEST! How can you get that worked up about a pacifier? It's just a cheap piece of plastic with a latex or silicone nipple, after all. After my laugh, though, I thought more about my own pacifier purchases and sheepishly admitted to myself that I, too, have a strong preference for a pacifier.
With three babies in the last four years, I have had a chance to try out a number of different pacifiers, including Playtex, Sassy MAMs, and NUK. I find myself always going back to NUK pacifiers with an orthodontic, silicone nipple. The orthodontic nipple seems to be best for simulating the same sucking technique that the baby uses at the breast and it supposedly interferes less with the baby's teeth when they come in. I definitely prefer the silicone nipple too because it doesn't seem to dry out and crack as quickly as latex and it also eliminates potential problems with latex allergies or sensitivities.
The NUK pacifier has two vent holes, one on each side, to ensure that the baby is able to breathe well through their mouth. The pacifier has a dip where the baby's nose fits so that they can easily breathe through their nose as well. It also makes it easy to tell whether the pacifier is upside down or not. That’s especially helpful when a doting big brother or sister attempts to reinsert the pacifier ("Make it look like a smile, honey")! The NUK pacifier comes in three different sizes: newborn to 6 months, 6 months to 18 months, and 18 months and older. I haven’t yet purchased the largest size, though who knows how long baby #3 here will need/want one.
I also like the convenient handle that comes on the NUK pacifier - it makes it easier for me to grab as I am groping around sleepily in the middle of the night. The handle also makes it easy for my baby to grab, which can be a blessing or a curse. I've had many a frustrating night trying to get my son to take his pacifier and GO TO SLEEP...only to have him pull it out and fling it across the room.
My biggest complaint about these pacifiers is that they steal away in the middle of the night, probably to join the missing socks from the laundry. I've been known to buy a dozen and strategically place them all over the house (crib, our bed, changing table, car seat, couch, coffee table, rocking chair, etc.) only to have them magically disappear...and never reappear (until the child has long since given them up). To say that I've bought fifty of these in my child-raising years is a very conservative estimate. The ones with silicone nipples are not always easy to find, either, so I tend to get one whenever I go to Target, whether I need it or not.
The bottom line is that NUK is the pacifier that all of my kids have preferred. They come in a variety of attractive colors, though that has never been a selling point for me. I just stick with what works to sooth the savage beast, err...I mean baby. In fact, the little angel has his NUK in right now as he drifts off to sleep.
How about that, I DID have something to say about pacifiers :-). I surprise myself sometimes!
