| sgentile's Full Review: Gerber Nuk Classic Pacifier |
Being a first-time mom, I wanted to make sure my newborn was as happy and comfortable as possible. I research before making any baby-related purchase. When there isn't adequate information, I conduct my own research and tests. This is how I know my baby likes the NUK pacifier the best!
I think the characteristics that my daughter prefers in the NUK pacifier were the flat shape of the nipple (easier to grasp, comfortable fit), and the fact that I could buy the proper "size". NUKs come in three sizes (birth to six months, six to eighteen months, and then 18 months and older).
Traits I like about these pacifiers are that they are:
• durable.
Mine have been in the dishwasher SEVERAL times, and are no worse off for the wear and tear. Maybe Gerber has improved the quality recently (I read a review where the reviewer didn't find the quality I did).
• have air vents.
This was most important when as a 5 lb. newborn, the pacifier covered half of my daughter's face.
• orthodontic style.
We feel better knowing that her in-coming baby teeth will not be harmed by using the pacifiers.
• bright colors are easy to find in the dark (on light-colored sheets). *NOTE: I do NOT recommend spending the extra money on the glow-in-the-dark NUK. See my review for more information.
• different colors make color-coordinating easy.
When my daughter was a newborn, I thought the "pink" banded pacifiers might have made it a little easier to see that my infant was a "girl".
My daughter is 13 months old, and still loving these pacifiers. And we have been happy with the NUKs.
Update 5/11/00: My daughter will be 18 months old next week. Although she is not using it as often, she is still enjoying her NUKs. The "size 3" NUKs are a little harder to find. I recently "asked" my grocer to order some.
Many parents are against pacifier use. I have wrote an entire editorial on two benefits that my daughter is currently getting from her pacifier (in addition to comfort); germ protection and a barrier to choking. My pediatrician agreed with me on those points. My daughter caught one cold all winter. It also proved to be a "sanity" saver whenever we went somewhere that was not baby-proofed.
