My baby is about 1 month old and has to constantly suck something! Like many of you, the NUK newborn pacifier was given to my baby at the hospital. And, she loved it.
OVERVIEW
Remove the handle
The Nipple Confusion Debate
Size & Colors - Size does matter
REMOVE THE HANDLE
I have noticed that several people have listed the "large" handle as a problem with these pacifiers. By "large" I mean that it's about as big as the pacifier itself! My baby, and probably most others, cannot yet keep the pacifer in her mouth all the time. Part of the problem is the weight of the handle pulling it out of her mouth as she loosens her suck on it. So, we took a knife to it and removed the handle. At first I thought this would not work. I thought it would leave sharp edges that would hurt the baby. IT DOES NOT LEAVE SHARP EDGES if done right. Just take a steak knife and cut the handle on both sides. It should come right off and there will be no edges left on it at all.
THE NIPPLE CONFUSION DEBATE
My baby has slight nipple confusion at the end/beginning of nursing/pacifer. By this I mean two things:
1) After nursing, when she's no longer getting milk or has been burped, but still wants to suck, her suck is too big for the pacifer and I have to hold it in her mouth a few seconds and ...
2) Before nursing, when she's hungry, but can't eat (the car), she tries to nurse on the pacifer and gets really frusterated ... again, her suck being too big to keep it in her mouth.
So, for us, nipple confusion in general is not an issue. She can change back and forth during the day easily. Since she has not had a bottle, there is another nipple not to get confused with. I have "heard" that the NUK is one of the easiest not to cause nipple confusion. As far as the "debate" goes as to whether to give pacifiers or not, it all depends on the baby and whether or not she can deal with the change. I have also "heard" that some babies won't nurse after given a pacifier and that the pacifier has to be completely removed from the baby so that she can nurse properly.
SIZE and COLORS - SIZE DOES MATTER
NUK comes in a variety of sizes and colors. Color, obviously is just for asthetic purposes and can be fun to show if you have girl or boy. Size, however, does matter. The size of the pacifiers ranges from Size 1 for babies from 0-6 months, size 2 for 6-18 months, size 3 for 18+months. It is important for the development of baby's suck (newborn), gums, teeth, and entire mouth that they have the proper size pacifier. If you want to know more on this issue, please consult with your pediatrian.
I would highly recommend this pacifier to anyone ... however, if your baby won't take it, try others. I do not, and will not say, that this is the absolute BEST one and that you should try to force your baby to take this particular one. It works for us, so we love it.
