| forkids's Full Review: Gerber Nuk Classic Pacifier |
This was the pacifier of choice by our hospital. This is what was offered if you forgot to bring along a choice of your own. For the cost of the birth of this baby I am taking all freebies, I decided. Free diapers, free formula (though I breast fed), free nose aspirators - why can't I buy these anywhere? free pacifiers...You name it. What was free was accepted.
My daughter had a hard time settling herself when she was born. We tried a few different types of pacifiers with her. My favorite for my son - the MAM line by Sassy. I had already established a brand loyalty. But I was flexible. Anything to help soothe a cranky baby. I believe in pacifier use. It is medically acceptable (by dentists too, through a certain age) and not discouraged. Self-comforting is a healthy habit.
I pulled out the NUK. It worked. The handle made it easy for me to grasp and my daughter was soon able to hook a tiny finger through the handle. A bit of training helps when you are driving in the car and a pacifier slips out.
This same handle that I was grateful for those first weeks, made me change brands. It just wasn't aesthetically pleasing. I found that the Mams were working again. So, I switched back. I only saw handles, though. I don't like the handles.
The curve or shape of the pacifier made it simple for my daughter to grasp. There are different sizes, colors and designs. The quality is fine. I always watch for any wear on the nipple and toss it. (Regardless of brands, I was buying new sets of pacifiers every couple of months, just to keep the wear and tear in check). There are air holes on either side of the solid plastic base so moisture doesn't build up and increase the risk for a rash.
But my feelings on pacifiers, the NUK included, they are a helpful comforting aid. They are not attractive, they serve a purpose. I don't like to call attention to pacifiers so I never buy patterns, garish colors or ones with handles (the freebies were fine).
Note: If your baby is happy with this pacifier, stay with it as you transfer to bottles. That same nipple shape is available in the bottle line, too.
I would recommend this line of pacifiers to friends as the shape of the nipple might be what is needed to close the sale. But, I will remind them of my minor aesthetic irritation, the ....handle.
