Rated a Very Helpful Review

Pros:easy to find, inexpensive, easy to use, gentle on stomachs

Cons:none

The Bottom Line: This rice cereal has saved many little lives.

I am the only 29 year old woman that you will cross paths with who always has unflavored Pedialyte, Gerber 2nd step chicken and turkey, and Gerber Single Grain Rice Cereal in her home… and no children. Why? Why have all of the kid accessories and no kid? Because lots of baby foods are great for sick kittens! I run a cat rescue and deal with lots of sick baby cats.

Yup. I have a fully-stocked child bar here at the house and none of the products are ever used for babies. I have earned many dirty looks from coworkers and in-laws when they hear about me buying electrolyte drinks with no plans to procreate EVER. I utilize baby products regularly, though, and was inspired by joyfulgirl91's write-off to finally review one. I chose Gerber Single Grain Rice Cereal. We use lots of this cereal in the rescue.

Product Description
From packaging: Your baby’s first bite of cereal will be the first of many. As you begin to introduce solids, you can control how smooth or thick her cereal is. Gradually, you can add more taste and texture and Gerber makes it easy with cereals for every phase of development. So even as your baby’s tastes change, she can still get the nutrients she needs.

What The Heck Does Someone Without Children Need This Cereal For?
Gerber Single Grain Rice Cereal is an excellent food to use when I have kittens. Baby cats always inevitably and without a doubt wind up with horrible diarrhea due to worms and other assorted parasites. Adding rice cereal into kitten food helps to absorb excess water in stools and solidify diarrhea. When I mix this cereal into canned food, I am hoping that it will soothe upset stomachs and help to produce solid stools.

Packaging
Gerber Single Grain Rice Cereal is sold in a 16 ounce cardboard box. The package is sold with a plastic wrap to help prevent tampering. Each box has a pour-spout that enables you to dispense this cereal into a bowl or other container.

Using This Cereal
The rice cereal is already cooked. All you need to do is pour out the rice cereal flakes and then mix in your desired amount of water, breast milk, formula, juice, etc. I mix Gerber Single Grain Rice Cereal with equal parts of unflavored Pedialyte and water when I am adding cereal to canned food for wormy kittens. I also have been known to mix up a 1:1 formula of Gerber 2nd step Chicken and Gerber Single Grain Rice Cereal with a dash of unflavored Pedialyte to syringe-feed very sick kittens that are refusing food.

Ingredients
From packaging: Rice Flour, Soy Oil-Lecithin, Tri- and Dicalcium Phosphate, Tocopherols (Vitamin E), Electrolytic Iron, Zinc Sulfate, Niacinaminde (A B Vitamin), Riboflavin (Vitamin B-2), Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B-6), Thiamin (Vitamin B-1), Folic Acid (A B Vitamin), and Vitamin B-12 (Cyanocobalamin).

Texture
Gerber Single Grain Rice Cereal can be just about any texture that you want. You just have to add liquid and mix thoroughly. Because it consists of dehydrated flakes, you need to add quite a bit of liquid to the mixture--the rice flakes soak up more than you'd think. If you add a small amount of liquid to the cereal, you'll have a thick cereal. I usually add a lot of Pedialyte and wind up with a smooth, thin rice formula.

Cost and Availability
I paid about $2 for a box of this cereal at Target. I have seen it listed for up to $3.69 on various web sites.

You can purchase Gerber products in food stores, discount retailers, drug stores, wholesale clubs, and also online. This is a well-known brand that is not difficult to locate.

Overall Opinion
I can’t speak about Gerber Single Grain Rice Cereal’s effect on infants but it is wonderful for sick kittens and cats. When I have kittens who are dealing with worms, coccidia, and giardia---I break out this cereal and start adding it into their diet. When I use this rice cereal into the cats’ food, I know that upset stomachs are going to settle down. It is very difficult to keep sickly kittens fed and well-hydrated and Gerber Single Grain Rice Cereal is one of the weapons in my kitty parasite arsenal. I always have a box of this food in my home which is comical to those who know me because it is well-documented that I never want to have babies of my own.
