Here I stand on the successful side of potty training. I tried a lot of stuff to get both of my girls trained, everything from videos, books, pull-ups, underwear, and anything to get the potty talk going. One thing that I found very successful is Gerber Soft Care Training Pants. You can pick up a 3 pack of these at Wal-Mart for around $8, and let me suggest you buy several packs, especially in the beginning, so you wont find yourself washing the same 3 pair every day or so. If you cant find these at Wal-Mart, your next best bet will be Target.
As far as the colors go, well, they vary from store to store. They come in a plain white, then a blue assortment (1 solid and 2 prints) for boys, and then I have found two different sets for girls, one pink, with 2 pink solids (one light, and one dark pink) and then a dark pink printed pair with poodles on them, and the other set was a purple set that included 1 white, one light purple, and then a white background with purple butterflies. As far as sizes go, Gerbers website claims that they run in sizes 18months-3T, but I will tell you these dudes are hard to find, and the only sizes I have seen are the 2T and 3T, but they happened to be the sizes we needed. These can be machine washed and dried, and there is no problem with shrinkage after lots of use.
As far as my potty training advice goes- Id suggest using these as preferred to Pull-Ups. Now true, I have been a user of Pull-Ups myself, for night time use and when they were not fully trained and we had to go out in public, and when my kids would not stop for diaper changes, but as far as getting them to go on the potty, these are what helped us. You see, with Pull-Ups, moisture for the most part is whisked away, and your child really never gets that uncomfortable wet feeling, but with these they do, and sure youre going to have quite a few accidents, but theyll eventually try not to wet these because of the wet feeling they get when they do. I know it sounds rather torturous, and never, ever, make your child sit around in wet underwear because they wet their pants, not only because it is degrading, but because youre punishing them for something they really dont have control over- I mean think folks, you dont just come out using the toilet or even knowing what a toilet is. So, its a learning process for both parent and child- and each child is different- some may be trained at barely 2 like my oldest, or they could be like my youngest and be almost 3 before they get the hang of it.
Ok, so off my soap box and back on to these underwear- the very middle panel of these is very thick and made of 100% cotton- the center panel will remind you of the cloth diapers that Gerber also makes. Youll find that this panel is very absorbent much more so than any Fruit of the Loom or Hanes underwear. The sides of the underwear are made like long-johns, in that they have sort of a waffle texture to them, and they are made of 50% cotton and 50% polyester. The waistband is elastic, and the leg openings are a little larger than that of conventional underwear so your kiddo can get used to pulling them up and down.
Experience:
Well, I really like that the middle of these is very thick, because it makes it pretty absorbent, which means less mess in the long run. I mainly trained in the summer, and I would just let my kids wear these with no pants, but I have also tried the Gerber Vinyl Pants, which go over the underwear, but these to me seemed to make them uncomfortable, and they tear up rather easily.
As far as my kids go, they had no problem wearing these underwear, and they fit pretty well, they clean up very nicely, and as I mentioned before I didnt have any trouble with them shrinking up after lots of washings. Also, they come out clean, even when you have incidents in them.
Overall, I have no qualms with these, and they provided success for both of my kids- it would be the first thing I would recommend to those potty training.
