Oh, if their were only a magic trick to teaching a child to go on a potty instead of in their pants. At just over 2 years old, my son and I, are heading down the path to potty training. This is my first child, so Im not sure what Im doing, but Im getting scant advice from my Mom and encouraging my son to only do the best that he can. Along the journey weve picked up a few items, one being a potty and the other being Gerber Training Pants.
Why These?
Ive already got my son figured out, he knows a pair of pull-ups or Pampers Easy Ups are simply hyped-up diapers. This in turn means he poops and pees in them and doesnt care, so asking him to go on the potty was simply a waste of time, in his mind.
We already have a small collection of 2T/3T boys briefs, which we refer to as daddy pants in our household, he understand those arent diapers, but they dont hold anything and Im trying to get through this training ordeal without replacing ever rug in the house.
So, the simple answer to Why These?, is the nice cotton padded panel that covers just enough area to trap pee, without letting it go everywhere.
More About These Trainers
We purchased the boy-styled trainers, which come in packs of 3. The boy-style came with one white pair, one light blue pair and one print pair. We bought 2 packages, which gave us a total of 6.
The underwear are made of 100% Cotton (and are made in India). They come in 3 sizes, 18 months (24 to 28 pounds), 24 months (28 to 32 pounds) and 3T (32 to 35 pounds). We purchased the 24 month size, my son falls right in the middle of the weight recommendation for that size, but I can easily say that the 18 months probably would have fit a bit snugger than the size we have. These trainers do run a bit larger than regular briefs, because these are a slight baggy, where his regular undies fit a lot better and their 2T/3T.
The underwear are pieced together with several pieces of fabric. They have side panels and an extra panel that covers the bottom, between the legs and a small portion in the front. The waist and legs have a bit of elastic and are covered.
Our Experience
So, were just starting out. My son long ago showed me he can rip his diaper off, and hes officially decided that diapers are yuck (his words), but he still uses them
We got for 2 parts of the day without diapers now, a period in the morning and a period in the evening. Hes still wearing diapers for naps, bedtime, trips out, etc.
My son has yet to poop in one of these things, which I doubt he ever will, but he has peed in them, which automatically turns into an emergency. Once, the underwear is wet, he wasnt out and he wants out immediately. This is usually noticeable because he comes running, grabbing at the bottom of the underwear, with a concerned and worried look
At least he knows it isnt comfortable and he certainly doesnt want to wear them wet.
Having had these has certainly excelled my sons potty training, even though we havent made any huge leaps into the whole process. Hes getting a better understanding of what is like to be wet and he already knows he doesnt want to be that way.
Cleaning
Cleaning instructions are simply with these pants. They need to washed in warm water and can be washed with other clothing. They recommend drying at medium heat and claim they can be ironed with a cool iron.
If my son has peed in the diaper I rinse them out, then wring them and put them with the other laundry. The pants maintain their colors well, dont shrink and are soft to the touch.
Overall
As far as I can tell these training pants are really helping my son understand the concept of being wet, peeing and realizing it is going to happen. He doesnt want to keep the underwear on when their wet and that is a big step in the right direction for us.
