Feeding your baby for the first time is a special and joyous occasion, and let’s not forget a wonderful bonding experience. But, eventually they get older and want to feed themselves. Now it comes time for the spills on the carpet and food all over the walls, floors, highchair, you, themselves and maybe even the family pets.
I know the above scenario oh to well when it comes to my 13-month old daughter Jordan and food. More food ends up being thrown on the floor then goes in her mouth. Lately when she is all done eating she likes to not only throw her food on the floor, but her bowl as well. After cleaning up spaghetti, macaroni & cheese, pizza, vegetables, fruits, soups and anything else I have feed her off the floor and walls constantly, I knew it was time to go out and buy something to take care of it. So off to the store I went in search of a bowl to save my floors and walls from the next spaghetti torpedo.
Once I bought the Gerber Training Plate the spaghetti torpedo stopped only for a little while. When she learned she could move the plate she then went on a crusade to get the plate off the tray and onto the floor.
The Gerber training plate is made of durable, unbreakable plastic. I’ve accidentally dropped it on the floor a couple times and it didn’t break. There are a few scratches on the bottom of the plate from when Jordan bangs on it with her fork and from when I have to cut up her food in tiny bits in it for her. But nothing so bad it’s unusable.
The Gerber Training Plate comes in bright, cheery colors that almost invite your little ones to eat of it. The training plate I have has a bright pink base and turquoise curved rim. I’ve also seen the training plate in a green base and purple curved rim. The training plate about the size of a salad plate and is big enough so you can put a few different foods on the plate without them running into each other. The rim is slightly raised up in the back. I would turn the lower end towards your toddler so they can see what they are eating and have better handle over what they are spooning out.
The Gerber Training Plate has a curved rim so it’s easier for toddlers to move food onto the spoon and guide it into their mouths. It’s also a big help by keeping more food on the plate then all over the highchair tray when Jordan tries getting the spoon into her mouth.
For those toddlers who like to throw their plates on the floor when they’re done eating or like to play “Look mommy my plate is on the floor, watch mommy pick it up and do it all over again” the training plate is equipped with a suction cup that secures to the bottom of the base. I’ve had my training plate for 2 months now and the suction cup does lose it’s suction in no time. I put a little water on the bottom and it stays attached to the highchair a little better. You or baby can still move the plate around and it doesn’t take much force to pull it off. Jordan has done this ten times in the past 2 weeks and I now just use the plate and rim.
The Gerber Training Plate is easy to clean in hot, soapy water. The suction cup base, plate and curved rim all come apart making it easier to clean. The plate, rim and suction cup is safe to wash on the top dishwasher rack only. The plate is even microwave safe, just be sure to remove the suction cup before heating.
I would recommend the plate and curved rim part of the Gerber Training Plate at least. It works great when you want to train your baby to eat on their own and keeps the food on the spoon better instead of falling off before it hits their mouth. If you’re looking for a plate with great suction capabilities the Gerber training Plate is not for you. You can buy the Gerber Training Plate almost any grocery, drug or department store. The price could be a little cheaper, especially since the main feature most people buy this plate for doesn’t work that great at all.
