lllopez's Full Review: Ghs Carlos Santana Big Core Guitar Strings Custom ...
As a guitarist, I'm always open to trying different guitar strings. I have been playing Gibson Vintage strings for some time and have used them almost exclusively on all my electrics. Recently I decided on trying the GHS Carlos Santana Big Core. Generally speaking, like strings generally share similarities with their differences notable only in the nuances of mechanics and complexities of tonal clarity and service life. I have rejected a lot of strings simply for going dead before the Gibson's. Generally they are softer and lose their shape and tone early.I was in my local Big big box guitar and saw the GHS Carlos Santana Big Core Custom Lights and decided to give them a shot.
Constructed with an extra large steel core, the nickel wound the GHS Carlos Santana Big Core Custom Lights are a little different in that they offer a nice compromise between a set of nines and tens. Packaged as Custom Lights the larger Santana Big Core Custom Lights are configured as: .0095, 0115,.016,.025,.033,.043 making them a half gauge larger than many strings in their class. For instance Daddario Super Lights are configured, 009, .011, .016, .024,.032, .042. and my Gibson Vintage Reissues' .010, .013, .017, .026, .036,.046 . They have created a niche gauge that may appeal to those who don't care for the loose play of nines or feel of ten's.
The larger steel core gives them a fatter, chunkier feel, unlike their diminutive counterparts. I particularly liked that the heavier Big Core Custom Lights are fatter sounding yet play like a hybrid. Granted, these won't make converts out of a nine or ten player but they do offer another option that will undoubtedly appeal to many players.
Sonically, the Big Core Custom Lights are pretty good, I must admit. They hold their shape longer and are a little easier on frets. The high E is articulate without twang with even ordered harmonics throughout as you play up and down the fretboard. Low's have snap and clarity with warm, clear mid tones. Will they make you sound like Carlos? The answer is no but you'll have moments when you think he is in the room. I installed the Big Core Custom Lights on a number of guitars including my PRS Custom 24 ( hated them!) American Deluxe Telecaster (Loved them). Yes, they still play a little loose but that is simply a matter of transition. My only fear is getting used to them and throwing off my touch when I play 10's. All tolled, I may buy them for the Tele and call it a day. They were sterile sounding on the PRS sounding almost too bright and shrill, especially with an overdrive. Woods and electronics will be the determining factor but the GHS Carlos Santana Big Core Custom Lights are certainly worth a go.
