Pros: A story about a little girl that survived an abortion.
First I want to tell you about how I found this book. I was at the drug store getting my prescription filled. There was a rack of books near by. It caught my eye. It was a small baby on the front cover. The title being, ?Gianna,? ?Aborted?and Lived to Tell About It?. It is a True Story
I always read the back cover first. It sounded good then I go to the first page to check out the authors writing style. It looked like a well written and told story, easy reading, and quick to get through. Which I?m happy to say it was all of the above.
It is a Christian oriented book. Dr. James Dobson, Focus on the Family Ministry helped to get this book published. The author is Jessica Shaver a freelance writer whose articles have appeared in several newspapers and magazines. She is also a Christian. She and her husband and 2 kids live in Long Beach, California.
I know this book is going to be very controversial. Pro-life verses Pro-Choice
The book starts out in April 1977. A young girl is on her way to get an abortion. She is seventeen years old and her name is Tina. She arrives at Avalon Hospital. Beyond the waiting room are two large rooms lined with beds. There were about thirty teenagers walking the floor and talking to one another.
Tina didn?t like this whole idea but she was told it was the best thing for her. She was really too young to understand all of this. They just said what she was carrying was a Blob of tissue. No Baby, just a Blob.
She had to fill out several papers which she didn?t really understand and was told to change into a hospital gown and wait for her name to be called.
She was taken to a room where there was a Doctor. He was just there to do a job. No hello!! No how are you? He told a nurse to get a needle. Tina was about to have a Saline Solution Abortion. Saline was injected into her uterus. The baby (blob) was to swallow it and suffocate. Then when labor came the baby would be born dead. The saline solution would also burn the skin off the baby.
Right at the time when the needle went in Tina knew something wasn?t right. She and her baby weren?t taking it. She was told to get up and walk and drink water until labor started. Hour after hour went by. All the other girls were finished and in bed but still nothing had happened for her. She went to bed. Sometime in the middle of the night she was awakened. Her water had broken. She went to get help but there was no one around. Just a skeleton crew was working. She found a nurse at a desk asleep. She told the nurse that her water had broken. The nurse just said, ?Go back to bed?. Things started happening quickly. The baby was coming out. There was no one there to help her. It was a Girl and the baby started crying. Tina thought to herself, ?What have I done? This is no blob it is a baby.?
A nurse came in and took the baby. She weighed 2.12 pounds and was a little over fifteen inches long. They came to take Tina for a D&C but first ask her what she wanted to name the baby. ?Gianna?
Gianna was placed in Foster Care. At about the age of eighteen months a lady by the name of Penny took her. Gianna had Cerebral Palsy because loss of oxygen at birth.
It was said she would never be able to crawl, sit, or walk but Penny worked and worked with her. Over the next few years Penny?s daughter, Diane and granddaughter, Dene? would come to visit. Diane and Dene? became very attached to Gianna. At the age of four Diane adopted Gianna and she was able to walk.
At the age of Twelve Gianna wanted to know the truth about herself so Diane told her. She had many questions. ?Why didn?t her mother want her? Was she sorry she aborted her? Does she ever think about me?? Diane couldn?t answer all of the questions. All she knew was what was on the birth certificate.
Shortly after finding out all this she became heavily involved in groups pertaining to Pro-life. She would be the Key Speaker all over the country. Telling her story. How God had saved her for a reason, testifying and singing. She loved to sing and was good at it. Her favorite singer was Amy Grant. Later she got to meet her. In her many engagements she ran into pro-choice groups but she was a tough little girl. They didn?t bother her. She would just say, ? I am not a blob I am a person.?
Between the age of thirteen to seventeen she and her Mother, Diane was on the road most the time. She was in Magazines, on TV. She got to meet important people and got to speak at hearings to do with abortion.
She felt she was saved to tell the world abortion was wrong, testify for God and sing praises to the Lord. She joined a Christian Youth Theater and was in a few plays and had singing parts.
She had learning disabilities because of the Cerebral Palsy. She had brain damage in parts of her brain but she was very intelligent in some areas. Reading and Vocabulary she tested at college level. Mathematics and her ability to put objects in a given order was zero. She still had problems with her legs and had to have several surgeries.
When she was thirteen years old she was on the Maury Povich TV show. Her Birth Mother saw her for the first time. Gianna was asked a question about her Birth Mother. ?Would you like to meet your Birth Mother?? Her answer was, ?At this point in my life, No. I have a family. I have forgiven her totally for what she did?. Tina turned the TV off and decided to stay out of her life.
In the book it was never told that she met with her Birth Mother.
Her Adopted Mother had Tina traced down. She knew someday would come when they would run across Tina. She was found and Diane and Tina met.
Tina tells her story
She told that Foster Care had Gianna up until she was five months old. She got to take her home. Tina was still living home with her mother and little sister. One day Tina came home and the house was empty. Gianna was gone. Her Mother and little sister were also gone. Her Mother had called Social Services. They came and told Tina she was not prepared to take care of a baby. She had no job, no place to live, she would need a twenty-four hour a day baby sitter, and she didn?t have a car to take Gianna to the Doctor because of her Cerebral Palsy. She didn?t have any of this so she lost Gianna.
She did visit her one time at a Foster Home but it was too much for her to bear. So she never went back to see her. Now in her thirties she was married and was a Christian and was Pro-life and knew now what she did back then was very wrong. Gianna still didn?t want to meet her Birth Mother.
At the end of the book Gianna was seventeen the same age as her Mother when she had her aborted. Gianna and her Mother still travel a lot on behalf of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the unborn, sexual abstinence, and pro-life and pro-family issues. She continues to write and sing her own songs.
At the writing of this book the Doctor who aborted Gianna now owns forty-six Clinics through out the Southwest. He is still doing abortions.

What Are My Thoughts on This Book
I think Gianna was a tough little girl. She just wanted to be like any other little girl. To be loved, for people not to see her disabilities but see a person who lived life and lived it for Jesus, to help others see that Abortion IS wrong.
My views are, when you are pregnant it is a child at conception. I am Pro-life. Tina was told as so many other women are that the early stages of pregnancy it is not a child but tissues a blob as Gianna put it, but at a early stage you CAN hear a heart beat. ?It is a child?.
I know everyone has his or her own opinion on Abortion and that?s your right by law, but by God?s Law it is wrong.
Gianna was born in April 1977. That would make her twenty-five years old now. I wonder what she has been doing with her life since this book was written eight years ago and did she ever meet with her Birth Mother?
Thanks for reading my review.
